The 9th Philippine International Motor Show will be held at the World Trade Center, Pasay City, Metro Manila. As expected, the hype is up for one of the largest automotive industry events in Asia, but let’s take a step back and see how the said event has changed the status quo of Philippine mobility over the years.
PIMS: Historic milestones
Started in 2007 and organized up to the present by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI), PIMS has been the go-to event for folks who want to see the latest developments in the automotive industry.
PIMS has consistently pushed the envelope with regard to innovation and groundbreaking automotive technological advancements.
In 2018, for instance, the motor show highlighted the Mitsubishi e-Evolution electric vehicle (EV) prototype. Earlier in 2016, the event hosted clean diesel technologies and a series of hybrid electric vehicles. The aforementioned, of course, has revolutionized the fuel efficiency standards in the local market.
The PIMS in 2014 was likewise notable as it saw a record-breaking 90,000 attendees.
Driving the automotive market
PIMS is also notable for being a primary driver for the Philippine automotive industry. Specifically, it has become the avenue for introducing the latest products and financing solutions to the general Filipino public.
The aforementioned, as CAMPI claims, is evident through its joint report with the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA).
From January-August 2024, the local market has now reached an annual vehicle sales figure of 304,764 units. The said number represents a 10.3 percent increase from 276,215 units during the same period in 2023.
“We are pleased to witness the continuing growth of the Philippine automotive industry. This steady upward trend reflects sustained demand within the sector, supported by consumer confidence,” CAMPI President Atty. Rommel Gutierrez said.
“As we move forward, CAMPI and our partners remain committed to driving innovation and contributing to the further development of the industry while ensuring that we meet the evolving needs of Filipino consumers,” Gutierrez added.
Towards the future
Now, in 2024, CAMPI is aiming to have a larger turnover of attendees compared to the milestone it achieved back in 2014. The aforementioned is backed by the fact that a total of 17 car brands will be present at this year’s grand motor show.
