BMW iX2 vs. the competition

BMW recently launched the iX2 all-electric crossover, alongside the  of the X1's battery-electric version called the  iX1.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much power does the BMW iX2 make?

The BMW iX2 makes 204 hp.
  • What is the estimated range of the BMW iX2?

The BMW iX2 can run from 439-478 km on a single charge.
  • Its arrival effectively expands BMW Philippines’ electric vehicle lineup and broadens the available options for Filipino car buyers looking for sustainable upmarket rides.

So, how does the BMW iX2 stack up versus segment rivals? Let’s pit the newcomer against category staples to see how it fares against the competition.

Before we begin though, here’s a quick look at the specifications of the model.

    BMW iX2

Outside, the BMW iX2 wears an angular iteration of the brand’s iconic kidney grille paired with sharp-looking accents on its cheeks and on its chin. Despite the lack of a radiator, the vehicle still dons a large latticework — allowing it to offer would-be owners a fascia that would most likely age well.

The LED lights that flank its grille give the BMW iX2 a cohesive look.

Its flowing roofline, which slopes seamlessly into the rear is noticeable from its side. At this angle, one can also appreciate the BMW iX2’s 19-inch M double-spoke, two-tone wheels; angular side sill garnishes; and body-colored side mirrors.

Other notable exterior appointments include the M Sport package with the M High-Gloss Shadow Line package (which gives the borders of the window an elegant black finish), the marque’s Comfort Access System (which allows convenient keyless entry), and an automatic tailgate.

Inside, it boasts seats upholstered in M Alcantara and Venganza materials. M Interior trim finishers (Aluminum Hexacube) further elevate the cabin atmosphere. Rounding up the luxurious yet sporty list of interior features found on the BMW iX2 are its multi-functional M Leather steering wheel and Sport Seats.

Those looking to drive home the BMW iX2 can also expect it to have a seamless screen, which combines the instrument panel and the infotainment system. The former is powered by the BMW Live Cockpit Plus system while the infotainment screens run on the iDrive Operating System 9.0.

Audio is blasted to a Harman Kardon-made high-fidelity sound system, which comes standard.

Power is handled by the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, comprised of a single electric motor and a single-speed automatic transmission fixed ratio system. The said setup makes 204 horsepower (hp) and 250 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.

In terms of range, the BMW iX2 can run from 439-478 kilometers (km) on a single charge.

The sticker price for the BMW iX2 is P4.29 million.

    Volvo C40 Recharge

Outside, the Volvo C40 Recharge appears to be the ideal representation of Swedish design and engineering. Its fascia is plain and simple (but in a good way), accentuated only by the carmaker’s emblem and headlamps, which when illuminated, have a T-shaped design.

The side profile of the Volvo C40 Recharge is highlighted by blacked-out wheel arches and door claddings, a set of modern-looking two-tone wheels, dark accents on the pillars, as well as body-colored side mirrors and doors.

Its rear end boasts a large glass, a sloping roof, a spoiler worn on the beltline, and a pair of taillamps that follow the sculpted hind side of the all-electric crossover.

Things get busy when one enters the cabin. Occupants will be greeted by seats swathed in leather-free material. Likewise, the carpet of the crossover is made with recycled materials, which stresses Volvo Cars’ strong commitment to sustainability.

Passengers will get to enjoy the Volvo C40 Recharge’s standard fixed panoramic roof that is made with laminated, tinted glass to help provide effective protection from glare and ultraviolet radiation.

The driver, on the other hand, will have a fully digital instrument cluster, coupled with a vertically oriented infotainment screen, which is common on most crossovers and sport utility vehicles today. The latter is equipped with built-in Google features such as navigation and other integrated applications.

Like the aforementioned BMW iX2, the Volvo C40 Recharge also gets Harman Kardon-branded speakers.

The dashboard is decorated with topographically-inspired trims as well as ambient lighting. Plenty of clever storage spaces are available, as expected from a car rich with Scandinavian design cues.

Propulsion is handled by an electric drive system that produces 408 horses with an emissions-free driving range of 549 km.

The price of the Volvo C40 Recharge is around P4.19 million.

    Mercedes-Benz EQA

Looking to hold the fort for the German brand in the luxury electric crossover segment is the Mercedes-Benz EQA.

The locally available model comes with hallmark exterior appointments like power domes on the vehicle’s hood, a black panel radiator grille, aluminum-look roof rails, a set of 19-inch five-spoke light alloy wheels in Electric Art Design, and electronically-folding side mirrors with surround lighting and a projector for the brand’s logo.

Overall, the looks of the Mercedes-Benz EQA are not over the top. Instead, it is silently opulent and creates a statement without making a scene.

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz EQA receives plenty of luxurious features like seats finished in ARTICO leather (with Cupertino fabric and two-tone rose gold/titanium pearl accents), Comfort seats, and illuminated door sills.

Further, the three-pointed star brand’s electric crossover is fitted with a 10.25-inch infotainment system (with Apple Carplay and Android Auto) and Thermotronic automatic climate control for improved passenger experience and comfort.

Its suite of convenience amenities includes the Mercedes-Benz Keyless-go comfort package, “Hey Mercedes” voice control, the Advance Sound System with 10 speakers, a wireless charging dock, and the brand’s Hard Disc Navigation system.

Power is facilitated by an electric drive system, which makes some 190 hp and 385 Nm of pulling power. Its all-electric range is estimated to be 457-495 km for a single charge.

The Mercedes-Benz EQA has a base price of P3.99 million.
