Electrified mobility: Nissan Leaf vs. Nissan Kicks
Nissan Intelligent Mobility not only focuses on safety, it also shows what powers the carmaker's electrified vehicles.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How does the electrified powertrain in the Nissan Leaf work?
The Nissan Leaf is a full-electric car, powered by a 40kWh, 350-volt battery that drives the EV's front wheels. How does the Nissan Kicks' e-Power work?
With Nissan's e-Power technology, the Kicks is technically a hybrid. The e-Power combines a 1.2-liter gasoline engine and electric motor. The e-motor and battery drive the wheels while the gas engine's only role is to charge the battery.Launched here in 2021, the 100% electric, zero-emissions vehicle Nissan Leaf is an embodiment of Nissan Intelligent Mobility. Meanwhile, as part of Nissan Philippines Inc.'s (NPI) push for local electric mobility, it will launch the Kicks on August 12.
Based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standards, the 2022 Nissan Leaf's 40 kWh lithium-ion battery provides a range of up to 311 kilometers on a full charge. This is comparable to making a one-way out-of-town journey to Baguio or commuting twice a day for five days between Quezon City and Bonifacio Global City, Nissan calculated.
Drivers of the electric hatchback have a variety of charging options, making charging simple and convenient. With the included universal charging cable and a dedicated wall socket at home, the Leaf may be fully charged in 15 to 18 hours. In several Nissan dealerships across the country, quick charging stations allow owners to fully charge their Nissan Leaf in as little as 40 to 60 minutes.
According to a Meralco test, the Leaf can be fully charged for just P363, which is the cost of two coffee shop drinks. According to Nissan Philippines, this reduces the running cost of the Nissan Leaf to roughly P1.17 per kilometer, which is less than half of the P2.08 per kilometer cost of a typical sedan with a petrol engine.
The 2022 Nissan Leaf's e-powertrain produces a maximum output of 150ps and 320Nm of torque.
More than just a car, this EV can act as an electric power source with its vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology. V2X enables bi-directional charging to use energy from the Leaf battery to power homes and equipment, or simply give back energy to the power grid.
As for the 2022 Nissan Kicks, it boasts of the carmaker’s spin on hybrid powertrain called E-Power. Nissan Philippines promised that it combines the benefits of an internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV.
E-Power comprises a 100% electric motor-driven system whose electric motor completely drives the wheels. In the Kicks, this e-motor gets its charge from a 2.13kW lithium-ion battery pack, which in turn, sources its juice from a 1.2-liter ICE acting as a generator.
As we’ve recently experienced, the 2022 Nissan Kicks e-Power’s engine only switches on when necessary, like when it charges the battery to prevent it from going flat — another touted benefit of e-Power — and when the e-motor needs a boost of power when the car travels uphill or doing overtaking maneuvers. The majority of the propulsion in less demanding situations and on flatter roads is taken care of by the electric motor.
All of this means that the Kicks’ e-Power delivers an EV-like drive that is eager, smooth, and quiet without the need for external charging, thereby also serving as a gateway to full EV ownership.
And so unlike the Leaf, the 2022 Nissan Kicks doesn’t need to be plugged in to receive charge. As long as the car’s ICE has its fill of fuel, it can always charge the battery. During our drive with the Kicks, the crossover enabled us to travel almost 500km in a tankful.
What's interesting is that both the Leaf and Kicks have another way of juicing up their batteries with e-Pedal.
This feature enables the car to accelerate, decelerate, and stop with the driver increasing or decreasing the pressure to the accelerator accordingly. When the accelerator is fully released, regenerative and friction brakes are applied automatically, bringing the car to an almost complete stop.
As the regenerative and friction brakes do their function, energy is sent to the battery. E-Pedal also makes the 2022 Nissan Leaf and Kicks easier to drive. In stop-and-go city traffic, the driver doesn't need to move his or her foot from the gas to the brakes to slow down the car.
After experiencing e-Pedal for ourselves, we can vouch for its effectiveness.
Aside from electrified power, the 2022 Nissan Leaf and Kicks have more other qualities going for them. The spec sheets of the two models below — the sole variant of the hatchback and the top-of-the-line variant of the crossover would prove.
