Family first: Toyota Avanza vs. Mitsubishi Xpander vs. Maxus G50
Midsize SUVs have their own strengths, but if your prospective vehicle will spend more time carrying crowds and cargo rather than taking the road less traveled, then take a look at MPVs that can do the job just fine.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What are the newly developed features for the all-new Toyota Avanza?
The latest Avanza features an advanced safety kit, Long Sofa Mode, and new 1.5- and 1.3-liter engines. What updates have Mitsubishi applied to the Xpander?
The Xpander has been updated with a restyled exterior such as LED headlights, and convenience features such as phone-mirroring capable infotainment. What are the key features of the Maxus G50?
The G50 carries a turbocharged engine, as well as 360-degree view camera and panoramic sunroof on select variants. In the market, among the most sought-after MPV models have Toyota and Mitsubishi badges in the form of the Avanza and Xpander, respectively. New brands in the market have also been determined to have a say in the segment, such as Maxus with its G50.
Being MPVs, it's what inside that truly counts, right? In the latest, third-generation Avanza, all of its four variants come with seven seats and what Toyota calls the Long Sofa Mode.
In Long Sofa Mode, the second-row seats fold to meet with the third-row's seat cushions to create, well, a sofa with a long seat cushion. When the Avanza needs to carry cargo of various shapes and sizes, all of the seats fold flush with the cargo floor to create a flat loading area.
Inside the Xpander, well, cargo space can be expanded by two rows of rear seats that fold flat, as well. Mitsubishi also claims that the Xpander's third-row seats are designed to accommodate adults. In keeping with the carmaker's omotenashi (Japanese for hospitality) philosophy, the seven-seater Xpander features storage dotted around the cabin, climate control system, and even sound-insulating glass.
As for the G50, it aims to impress its eight passengers with the toys onboard. The cabin features a panoramic sunroof to give the occupants a sense of openness. It's also equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment system that can be connected to a smartphone through USB cable or Bluetooth. And if those smartphones run out of juice, the G50's wireless charging pad for Apple and Android devices are ready.
Each of these models, naturally, use gasoline engines to transport a group of seven or eight. Under the hood of the Avanza variants are a pair of newly developed 1.5- and 1.3-liter engines, with the former producing 106hp and 138Nm of torque and the latter packing 98hp and 122Nm. The upper two Avanza variants use a CVT, while the remaining two use a five-speed manual.
The Xpander retains the Mitsubishi 1.5-liter 4A91 engine that makes 105hp and 141Nm of torque, as well as the four-speed automatic transmission and five-speed manual options. We say "retain" because the Xpander we're referring to — which features a reskinned exterior and new onboard technologies — is the facelifted version, for which the local Mitsubishi distributor has opened reservation books.
As for the G50, it brings a turbocharged engine in the segment, particularly the 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that generates a maximum power output of 169hp and 250Nm. Maxus has paired this engine with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic that promises quicker and more fuel-efficient shifts.
Now that we already mentioned the highlight amenities of the G50, let's go over what you get with the Avanza and Xpander.
Depending on variant, the Avanza is equipped with an eight-inch Audio Display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, USB ports, and push start ignition. For safety, the Avanza gets a host of gadgets such as reversing camera and sensors, and even Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Camera Traffic Alert, Vehicle Stability Control, and six airbags.
The Xpander receives a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for 2022, too. USB ports and power outlets for rear passengers — including those in the third row — aim to provide more passenger comfort. How the Xpander puts the passengers at ease, however, is Mitsubishi's Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body, which absorbs the energy of collisions from any direction.
On the other hand, the G50 is equipped with a 360-degree view camera and dual front airbags and side airbag, all of which are cocooned in a body made with double layer welding technology that provides an extra layer for protection. Like its Japanese-badged competitors, this Maxus also features Isofix attachment points where you can securely latch child seats.
So, the Avanza, Xpander, and G50 are appearing to be as capable and spacious family cars as many SUVs out there. Get to know more details about your next family car through the spec sheets of these three MPVs — all in top-spec form — below.
