Maxus T60 vs. Toyota Hilux: Which pickup will you pick up?

Maxus T60 vs. Toyota Hilux: Which pickup will you pick up?

In early 2020 (shortly before the pandemic-induced lockdown was first implemented in the Philippines), Maxus joined the pickup truck segment in the country with the launch of the Maxus T60.

The brand had then already been known for its commercial vehicles, and the T60 was introduced as a true contender for its off-road capabilities, payload capacity, towing power, and wading depth.

The T60 is engineered to carry all kinds of cargo without sacrificing the road performance, but does it have what it takes to be the best in its class? We pit it against the best-selling pickup truck in the country, the Toyota Hilux. Note that we ranged a Toyota Hilux 2.4 G 4x2 AT against the 4x4, but their pricing is merely P33,000 away.

If you're looking at this price point, these two match up nicely. Question is: Does the 4x4 capability matter to you?

The Maxus T60 is motivated by a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine with variable geometric turbo (VGT) technology that delivers a maximum power output of 150ps at 3,400rpm and a peak torque of 360Nm between 1,600 to 2,000rpm. Meanwhile, the Toyota Hilux is powered by a 2.4-liter variable nozzle turbo diesel engine that produces a similar maximum power output of 150ps at 3,400rpm and a maximum torque of 400Nm between 1,600 to 2,000 rpm. Both trims come with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Both pickup trucks are equipped with airbags for the driver and the front passenger, however, the Maxus T60 provides an additional airbag for the driver’s knee. The T60 and Hilux also come with child restraint system features including Isofix and child safety locks. The Maxus T60 is also equipped with additional safety and security technologies such as electronic stabilization program, anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) function, reverse sensor and camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and engine immobilizer. Meanwhile, the Toyota Hilux comes with ABS with brake assist and EBD, vehicle stability control (VSC), hill-start assist control (HAC), emergency brake signal, and clearance and back sonar. It also comes with the Toyota Vehicle Security System (TVSS), which features an upgraded anti-theft system with the use of engine immobilizer and horn.

The Maxus T60’s exterior is equipped with LED auto headlights, daytime running lights (DRLs), front and rear fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, and 17-inch alloy wheels. On the other hand, the Toyota Hilux comes with multi-reflector halogen headlights, LED front fog lamps, intermittent wipers, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The T60 gives a more elegant vibe inside the cabin as it is upholstered with cozy leather seats, while the Hilux gets standard fabric seats. The Maxus contender is also equipped with a more advanced 10-inch touchscreen audio display, compared to the 8.75-inch standard audio display of the Toyota Hilux. Both vehicles have a six-speaker audio system with USB, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay connectivity. To further in-cabin comfort, both the Maxus T60 and Toyota Hilux provide an automatic air-conditioning system. Other interior features that the two pickup trucks share include power windows, power door locks, a multi-functioning steering wheel, cup and bottle holders, and 12V accessory power outlet.

Both vehicles come with a keyless entry system. The Maxus T60 also features a push engine start/stop system, while the Toyota Hilux gets a rotary type ignition system.

We have listed down the full specifications of the Maxus T60 Elite 4x4 AT variant and the Toyota Hilux G 4x2 AT variant below so you can see for yourself which pickup truck model suits your preference.
