Sibling revelry: The Honda Jazz and City Hatchback face off

The Honda Jazz is one those cars that challenge you to find fault with them. For generations, Honda's small hatch has always been considered the benchmark in its class for reliability, practicality, and (for the earlier versions) cute yet clean styling.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Is the Honda Jazz still available in the Philippines?

Until supplies last, the Jazz is available in select Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. dealerships.
  • What are the special features of the Jazz and City Hatchback?

Both the Jazz and City Hatchback are powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine, and pack clever seating configurations.
  • And for some, the best quality of the Jazz is its sporty driving dynamics, even before it receives the countless modification parts available for the model.

These are a few reasons why when Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) announced that the Jazz will be phased out for the Philippine market, many Honda fans bid a sad farewell to the model.

Although that may be the case, we don't have to say goodbye to the Jazz too soon. HCPI said that the Jazz will be phased out once supply runs out — and it looks like there's still a chance to own one of Honda's landmark cars. The Jazz is available with discounts in HCPI's promo that runs until December

But when you look closely, you'd see that the Jazz and the City Hatchback — the replacement of the former car — are both competing in the same segment, and under the same brand.

This makes for an interesting sibling rivalry.

After all, the City Hatchback has a lot to live up to. To start with, the Jazz styling is distinctive, featuring a one-box and cab-forward shape. The upright rear end and expansive side windows are also a Jazz hallmark, while the cutesy large headlights of the car's predecessors are swapped in favor of sleeker, slimmer ones in this third generation.

Meanwhile, the said practicality comes courtesy of its Ultra Seats, a set of seating configurations. It includes Utility, Long, Tall, and Refresh modes.

In Utility mode, the 60:40 split rear seats fold down as close to the floor as possible to create a level surface to the cargo hold. It's the same story in Long mode, but here the front passenger seat is folded in order to accommodate objects as long as two meters.

In Tall mode, the rear seat cushions fold upward movie theater seat-style to accommodate taller items such as a plant. In Refresh mode, the front seats are reclined 180 degrees to create a level "bed" to the rear bench.

The City Hatchback also packs the clever interior packaging tech, which goes by the name ULTR seats in this model. The City Hatch manages to fit ULTR in its body, which is slimmer than its sibling.

Adding to the City Hatch RS, the sole variant locally available so far, wears a Rallye Sport "RS" body kit. This included a deeper front bumper and a high-gloss black front grille with RS emblem. For maximum brightness, the hatchback is equipped with full LED lights front and rear.

The hatchback’s strong side profile is highlighted by the high-gloss black power folding mirrors and 16-inch two-tone Berlina black aluminum alloy wheels.

Moving on to the tech specs, there's little to separate the Jazz and City Hatchback. They both use a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine and Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). As usual for Honda, it said that this combo provides sportiness and efficiency.

With everything considered, which would you pick: the old guard or the new boy? Let the spec sheets of the RS versions of the cars help you answer that question.
