2020 Mitsubishi Strada GL, Cab & Chassis - Full details

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) quietly introduced two new variants to its Mitsubishi Strada lineup— the GL 4x2 MT, and the Cab and Chassis. The lack of fanfare and minimal marketing effort must be because, for one, pickup trucks basically sell themselves here on our shores and secondly, maybe because these new models are the most basic and affordable end of the Strada’s line up. In fact, the GL and Cab & Chassis variants only replace and drop the L200 versions which still have the old front façade found in the prior generation of Strada.

The new 2020 Mitsubishi Strada GL and Cab & Chassis models will compete directly with Toyota and Isuzu’s affordable workhorse— Toyota’s Hilux 2.4 J DSL 4x2 MT and Hilux 2.4 Cab & Chassis 4x2 MT; and Isuzu’s D-Max RZ4E LT 4x2 MT and RZ4E Single Cab & Chassis MT. So, how affordable are the new Strada models?

The new GL and Cab & Chassis models are priced as follows:

Since the Mitsubishi Strada Cab and Chassis 2.5D 4x2 MT and Mitsubishi Strada GL 4x2 MT are the most stripped-down version of the Strada, expect it to be very affordable as the target buyers for these models are those building their fleets for commercial use. Thus, offering an affordable, reliable, efficient, and value-for-money option is a must.

For the Strada C&C model, it still gets the old 2.5-liter Di-D turbo-diesel engine (also found on the previous-generation Montero Sport) and the same 5-speed transmission. While the Strada GL gets the new 2.4-liter 4N15 MIVEC turbodiesel that you would find under the hood of the rest of the current Strada models. And with the new engine comes an updated transmission— a 6-speed manual that replaces the old 5-speed manual transmission.

Exterior updates

On the outside, both the new Strada models get the same updated look like the rest of the pickup trucks on this fleet. Before, the old L200 version still sports the same pre-dynamic shield face. Now, the Mitsubishi Strada C&C and GL models have the same dynamic shield front façade just like the rest of the Strada fleet. Besides that, both new Strada models are fuss-free and come with the most basic of treatments like unpainted matte black trims— side mirror, door handles, and fog light housings. Mitsubishi also maintains the no rear bumper for the GL model. Again, keep in mind that these models are geared towards the economy for commercial purposes so looks are not the top priority.

When it comes to interior comfort, features, safety, and driver-assist features, expect the very basic as well. Both of these models does not come standard with cruise control, auto brake system, parking sensors, push start button, or leather upholstery that you would find on mid and flagship models of the Strada, though you can surely add these features as an option. However, the GL has additional safety features that the C&C does not have. These include:

• Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution
• Engine immobilizer
• Security alarm
• Stability control
• Speed-sensing door locks
• ISOFIX

How do the new Strada models stack up to the competition?

Direct competitors like Toyota and Isuzu also offer the same 4x2 MT basic model and cab and chassis option for their pickup lines. Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max offer some of the most basic and affordable variants of pickup geared more towards commercial rather than utilitarian use just like the Strada. 

In terms of price, all three automakers offer the C&C models under the one million mark while the very basic 4x2 MT models also average on the 1 million levels. But compared to the Cab and Chassis models of Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max, the Mitsubishi Strada is the most affordable by at least Php 15,000. 

For safety and features, the Toyota pickups have more to give as their C&C version includes driver, front passenger, and knee airbags while the Strada C&C has none at all. Likewise, Isuzu’s C&C also has driver and passenger airbags. But when it comes to base models, the Strada GL inches the D-Max RZ4E LT and Hilux 2.4 J DSL because of its added safety features which justifies its higher price tag.
