2020 Suzuki S-Presso: What to expect

2020 Suzuki S-Presso: What to expect

Suzuki Philippines is targeting the budget-conscious Pinoy car buyers yet again as it positions itself to entry-level buyers with its new offering— the 2020 Suzuki S-Presso, and it seems like Suzuki wants to make Kei concept vehicles a valid option for urban-dwelling Filipinos. Like the compact Jimny and Swift, the new 2020 Suzuki S-Presso is a tiny crossover that looks very much like a hatch but has a high ground clearance similar to subcompact SUVs. And now that it just landed in our shores, here are some of the things you should expect on this newest offering from Suzuki before its official unveiling later this month.

1. Modern yet retro design

The newest member of the Suzuki Ph’s fleet takes a modern design approach with a bit of a retro vibe. The S-Presso’s round curves on the rear, fenders, and side arches are modern design touches that fit well with the angular front hood. It got a minimalist front grille with a massive air dam underneath to give it the rugged SUV look. This Suzuki compact crossover keeps it simple— no shark fin antenna or signal light on the side mirror which somehow adds to its retro vibe.

2. Kei proportions

Kei cars are the Japanese’ category for the smallest passenger cars that are highway legal. It is not a well-developed auto segment here in the country but Suzuki has been slowly introducing the concept with some of its offerings like the Jimny, Swift, and Alto. The S-Presso is no different, it measures 3,565 mm long, 1,520 mm wide, and 1,549 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,380 mm. Its ground clearance is at 180 mm and can seat five passengers comfortably, driver included. If the Indian version is to be the standard, the country’s version of the S-Presso will ride on either a 13-inch or 14-inch wheels as an option.

3. Modest performance

The new Suzuki S-Presso will be powered by a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine capable of delivering a decent 67 hp of power and peak torque of 90 Nm. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as power is sent to the two front wheels. Though there is an automatic transmission variant, it is said that the Philippines will only get one trim level. At least initially though. And if these figures are lacking luster, do take note that this small crossover is ideal for city driving and that its small engine means more fuel efficiency. In fact, it is reported that the car averages 21.7 kmpl. Not too shabby if you are just using the S-Presso to take you around the Metro.

4. Adequate safety features

If the Indian S-Presso version will be the gauge, expect this compact crossover to have the basics such as dual front airbags, an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake distribution, seat belt reminder with alarm, reverse parking sensors, and a speed alert alarm. Keep in mind though that this is an affordable vehicle and the safety features are ample enough to cover more than the basics.

5. Updated cabin feels

Inside the Suzuki S-Presso are high seating for a commanding view of the road. The dashboard has a dynamic center console. The Indian S-Presso version is equipped with either a simple 1-DIN head unit or a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. But since the Philippine version will come in one trim only, maybe the 7-inch touchscreen will be an add-on feature. Expect the infotainment system to come with Bluetooth and 2 speaker sound system. Other cabin features include three front cabin lamps, a sun visor, accessory socket for charging phones and gadgets, bottle holders in the gearbox and front doors, keyless entry, and power windows.

6. Affordable car

The S-Presso might just be the most affordable compact crossover “SUV" in the market. Suzuki Philippines revealed that the starting price for the S-Presso is at Php 518,000. That’s at the same price point as most compact sedans and hatchbacks. What is more, if you reserve between March 1-18 2020, you’ll get an additional 15,000 discount. Simply pay the Php 5,000 minimum down payment and you’re all set.

Bottom line

The 2020 Suzuki S-Presso is truly a starter car for individuals who wants to transition to become vehicle owners. It does not only offer affordability, but also fuel efficiency despite its modest performance. Suzuki will officially unveil the S-Presso on March 18, 2020.
