2020 Volkswagen ID.3 is the people’s electric car

MANILA: Earlier this year, Volkswagen went on to discontinue the legendary Beetle and some other models from its global portfolio, for all good reasons though. Coming out from the production facility is the all-new Volkswagen ID.3, an all-electric hatchback that is being tossed as people's electric car by the German automaker. Unlike other auto brands who prefer to display a prototype before launching the final production model, Volkswagen has directly brought the car that will hit the roads.

However, the model shown will be made available in western countries before it makes its way to other parts of the world. Design-wise, the Volkswagen ID.3 carries a not so quirky appearance. Upfront is a pair of mildly upswept projector headlamps with built-in LED DRLs. Just like any other all-electric car, the ID.3 also gets a minimal grille that connects the two headlamps.

A textured pattern on the bumper brings further enhances the calm and composed look of the hatchback. When viewed from the sides, we see blacked-out A- and B-pillars. A black roof and half-blacked-out rear end provide the ID.3 with an alluring look. Lastly, the alloys carry a rather unconventional and unique dual-tone appearance.

The dashboard on the ID.3 is a neatly put unit. There is a large centre-mounted touchscreen infotainment display along with an all-digital instrument cluster. Then there is a sporty flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel with various audio and other controls. On to the mechanicals now, the Volkswagen ID.3 houses an electric motor that makes 204 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 310 Nm.

Most importantly, the ID.3 is touted to boast a range of 550 kilometres on a single charge. Other mechanical and performance figures remain disclosed for now. The German automaker is said to keep the price of the people's electric car under € 30,000, which translates to Php 1.7 million.
