2021 Volkswagen Taigun uncovered, launch slated for 2021
MANILA: Yesterday we did a story on Volkswagen's upcoming compact SUV that will rival the likes of the Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, and Hyundai iX25 and other models. And today, the German SUV has been brought out in the flesh in India.
Just before the Auto Expo 2020 that will kick start on February 7, 2020, Volkswagen has gone ahead and revealed its offering for the compact SUV segment, the Taigun. Just as we had predicted, the Volkswagen compact SUV Taigun is somewhat the China-spec T-Cross, albeit with a different name. Moreover, the name Taigun is also no brand-new as the German automaker had already used it for a subcompact SUV that it showcased at the Auto Expo 2014 in the past.
The exterior of the Volkswagen is bolstered by the likes of LED headlamps with LED DRLs, sporty front & rear bumpers with skid plates, LED taillamps, roof rails, body cladding, large machine-finished wheels, and a blacked-out roof. On the inside, we will get to see a large 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the latest connectivity features, even larger 10.25-inch all-digital instrument cluster, leather upholstery, and much more.
Underpinning the Volkswagen Taigun is the German automaker's MQB A0-IN platform, which is a unit especially localised for India. Powering the compact SUV is a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol-fed engine generating 115 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 200 Nm. As for the transmission options, there is a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed DSG transmission. Since stringent BS-VI norms will be implemented in India from April 1st, 2020, Volkswagen won't be offering the Taigun with a diesel engine. The automaker, however, is planning to introduce a CNG variant.
The Volkswagen Taigun will be launched alongside the production model of the Skoda Vision IN. With that said, we should see both the compact SUVs hitting the Indian roads in 2021. The Volkswagen Taigun, along with the Skoda Vision IN, will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, and others.
