2023 Toyota Agya Indonesia launch: Toyota Wigo twin gets Raize engine, GR-S variant

MANILA: Toyota has unveiled the 2023 Agya in Indonesia, replacing the outgoing model that was first introduced to the Indonesian market ten years ago — a trailblazing entry in Indonesia's Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) program at the time. The sibling to the Malaysian Perodua Axia goes to market on a new platform and revised suspension.

As with the previous generation — or the current Philippine Wigo at the moment — the 2023 Agya is another name given to Toyota's mini hatchback, and is also the basis for the Perodua Axia and Daihatsu Ayla. The Malaysian carmaker is under the Japanese carmaker’s umbrella.

The G and the GR Sport, two models from the 2023 Toyota Agya, have been made public. The 2023 Toyota Agya, like the Perodua Axia, is based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA), which seeks to provide greater handling and comfort as well as wider proportions and, consequently, a more roomy interior.

2023 Toyota Agya/Wigo Dimensions, Styling

Toshihiro Nakaho, Executive Chief Engineer, claims that despite the Agya being an A-segment entry, its overall length is comparable to that of a number of B-segment vehicles. For reference, the 2023 Perodua Axia measures 3.7 meters long, 1.6 meters wide, and 1.5 meters tall.

Just like their forerunners, the 2023 Toyota Agya and Perodua Axia will be visually distinct. The first difference between the normal Agya and the future Axia is in the placement of the LEDs; whereas the Agya's LEDs are positioned above the primary beam units on the Axia, the Axia's are positioned lower within the headlamp assembly.

Moving down, the front bumper of the Agya has been given recessed LED daytime running lights that are vertically oriented. The Agya and the 2023 Axia look to have similar silhouettes when viewed in profile. The standard model displayed at the Indonesian premiere appears to be equipped with single-tone, silver-finish alloy wheels that may measure 14 inches in diameter, while the GR Sport model is equipped with dual-tone, machined-finish alloy wheels that appear to be slightly larger and may measure 15 inches.

2023 Toyota Agya/Wigo Powertrain

Without providing any details, Nakaho stated that the 2023 Toyota Agya receives a new engine. This new engine may be the WA-VE 1.2 liter three-cylinder engine that powers less-expensive Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize models; it has an output of 88 PS and 112 Nm. A CVT will be paired to the WA-VE engine. 

Comparatively speaking, the modern Toyota Wigo/Agya is powered by a one-liter, three-cylinder engine that generates over 60 horsepower and 90 Nm of torque and is mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

The interior's dashboard design is almost identical to that of the 2023 Perodua Axia, with a few minor exceptions like the air conditioning controls and what appears to be a more basic analog driver instrumentation system as opposed to the Axia's digital system.

Given that the 2023 Toyota Agya GR Sport model lacks the recognizable sportier look, this may be the more basic equipment in the normal variant. The more modern seven-inch TFT instrument panel shown in the highest trim level of the 2023 Axia might then be installed in the GR Sport.

Here, it can be seen that the Agya's standalone infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay. A 12-volt/120-watt power outlet is situated in front of the gear lever, ahead of the two cup holders. According to executive chief engineer Nakaho, the Agya's GR Sport model has retuned steering and suspension for a livelier driving experience.
