3 future Nissan EVs to be produced at transformational EV36Zero hub

MANILA: Nissan has announced that all three of the models produced at its Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom (UK) will have all-electric versions as part of its initiatives for a zero-emissions future.

The Japanese carmaker will be investing £3 billion to transform its Sunderland plant into an EV36Zero hub, which will be the venue of the production of the future electric versions of the Qashqai and Juke, as well as the upcoming Leaf model.

According to Nissan, the future models will be based on the Hyper Urban, Hyper Punk, and Chill-Out concepts.

Vehicle and battery production will be powered by the EV36Zero Microgrid, which will involve Nissan’s wind and solar farms and be able to supply the company and its neighboring suppliers with 100-percent renewable electricity.

“Exciting, electric vehicles are at the heart of our plans to achieve carbon neutrality. With electric versions of our core European models on the way, we are accelerating towards a new era for Nissan, for industry and for our customers,” Nissan President and Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida stated.

The company has also received £15 million of funding from the UK government for the improvement of the technical competence and research and development capability of the Nissan Technical Center in Bedfordshire.

“Nissan has a proud history in car manufacturing in Sunderland and their continued commitment to the UK shows how our support for business is getting results, helping create thousands of jobs and solidifying Britain’s place as the world’s eighth largest manufacturer,” UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said.

EV36Zero is part of Nissan Ambition 2030, the carmaker’s long-term vision to become a truly sustainable company. Aside from introducing cutting-edge electrified vehicles, Nissan will also transform its global operations as part of the vision. The carmaker targets to become carbon neutral across the lifecycle of its products by fiscal year 2050.
