9th PIMS: Changan PH previews Hunter REEV

MANILA: Changan Auto Philippines has previewed the Hunter, which is dubbed the world’s first Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV) pickup truck.

Per the local subsidiary of the Chinese carmaker, it looks to launch the Changan Hunter REEV in the first quarter of 2025 and aims to keep it in the sub-P2 million price range.

Hybrid powertrain

Under the hood of the Changan Hunter REEV is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors. Its internal combustion engine acts as a generator — aka range extender — to juice up its 31.18-kilowatt-hour battery, similar to the concept of the Nissan Kicks e-Power and BYD Sealion 6 DM-i.

The electric motors on its front and rear axles produce a combined power output of 268 horsepower with 470 Newton-meters of torque.

In electric vehicle (EV) mode, the Changan Hunter REEV can drive up to 180 kilometers (km) while it pushes the numbers up to 1,031 km when assisted by the range extender.

Exterior, interior

One of the Changan Hunter REEV’s striking features is its “shark face” fascia flanked by a pair of “7”-shaped LED headlights.

Reinforcing its rugged nature, the pickup truck boasts a body-on-frame chassis with a double wishbone suspension at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear.

Inside, it offers would-be owners a combined screen setup, comprised of a 12.3-inch infotainment system with a 7.5-inch instrument cluster. Creature comfort appointments include power seats and an air conditioning system with a particulate matter filter.

The Changan Hunter REEV will remain on display at the brand’s booth at the ninth edition of the Philippine International Motor Show.

Held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, the automotive expo will run until October 27.
