All-electric Porsche Taycan is brand’s best-seller in Europe
MANILA: The Taycan, the Stuttgart-headquartered brand’s first pure-electric vehicle, has just been named Porsche’s best-selling model in Europe — accounting for close to a fourth of the firm’s August 2020 deliveries. Porsche added in a media release that the Taycan also generated healthy volume in the US during the third quarter.
It should be noted that the Taycan was recently launched formally in the Asia Pacific region via a live online event. The affair, held at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore, was a chance for Porsche to better explain to a regional audience what the Taycan stands for.
Porsche Asia Pacific Product Expert Tim Walkowiak said, “The Taycan links our heritage to the future. While its heart is 100% electric, its soul is 100% Porsche.” He added that Porsche’s roots in electric vehicles actually dates back to 1900 with the “world’s first functional hybrid car,” called the Lohner-Porsche, developed by Ferdinand Porsche.
The next stage in the evolution of the Porsche’s electrification came much later via the Cayenne S hybrid in 2010, which “renewed Porsche’s exploration in electromobility,” averred Walkowiak. This was followed in 2013 with the Panamera SE plug-in hybrid, the first PHEV in the luxury car segment.
Other milestone models include the 918 Spyder super sports car, “a great inspiration for the design of the Taycan,” and the 919 Hybrid that won the World Endurance Championship three times in a row. Walkowiak added that the latter car was “used to test new technology, some of which are in the Taycan.” Currently, the Porsche’s Formula E 99X Electric shares a lot of the same tech developed for the Taycan.
Back to European sales, according to London, UK-based auto industry intelligence supplier JATO Dynamics, as cited by Car Industry Analysis, “Porsche sold 1,183 examples of the Taycan, with the result comprising 23.4% of the carmaker’s 5,046-unit total sales in Europe in August. The report revealed the Taycan was also among the region’s best-selling models in its size segment during the same month.“ Porsche additionally sold 771 units of the Cayenne, 554 units of the Cayenne Coupe, and 646 units of the Macan — allowing SUV models as a whole to account for 39% of Porsche sales in August. Furthermore, 1,097 units of the 911 were sold, plus 517 units of the 718 Cayman and Boxster, and 278 units of the Panamera.
A total of the 1,858 Taycans, were sold in the US from July to September (11.95% of 15,548 units sold there). All told, Porsche sales increased by 5.0% over the same period last year.
The Taycan comes in three trims: Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo, and Taycan Turbo S. Power output ranges from 530hp to 761hp; range averages at 400 kilometers “which should cover about five to seven days of regular driving in urban settings like Metro Manila,” says Porsche Philippines.
The range-topping Taycan Turbo S is now available in locally at Porsche Philippines showrooms on EDSA, Greenhills, and at Bonifacio Global City. For more information, visit porsche.com.ph, facebook.com/porschecentrephilippines, and instagram.com/porsche_philippines; call +63917-880-0328.
