BMW starts next-gen M5 production

MANILA: BMW Group has started to build the next-generation M5 high-performance sedan at its Dingolfing plant in southern Bavaria, Germany.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much horsepower can the all-new BMW M5 produce?

The next-gen BMW M5 can produce up to 727 horsepower.
  • Where is the all-new BMW M5 made?

The all-new BMW M5 is made at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing, Lower Bavaria, Germany.
  • Notably, the seventh-gen version is the first M5 to come off the assembly line equipped with an electrified powertrain. Specifically, it is now powered by an “M Hybrid” system comprised of a twin-turbo V8 engine, a high-voltage battery, and an electric motor.

The all-new BMW M5 can generate up to 727 horsepower in total, allowing it to sprint from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.5 seconds. In addition to its punchy performance, the vehicle is likewise equipped with an electric-only mode. As per the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure, the said mode can cover up to 69 kilometers.

In addition to celebrating the next-gen M5’s official start of production, BMW also highlighted the unique manufacturing process involved in assembling the sports car.

As BMW Dingolfing Plant Director Cristoph Schroder shared, the vehicle is being built in a “under [one> roof production approach.”

Specifically, the all-new M5’s central components are either made on-site or sourced from adjacent facilities. The chassis of the vehicle itself is assembled at the Dingolfing plant, while the car’s high-voltage battery is produced at BMW’s Competence Centre for E-Drive Production, which is next door.

In addition to the aforementioned, all M-specific modifications for the base BMW 5-series body necessary to build the M5 are also done on-site. Examples of the said adjustments include stiffening the 5-series body, flaring wheel arches, installing carbon-fiber parts, and body painting, among others.

The next-gen BMW M5 is scheduled to hit European markets by November 2024. In the near future, the Munich-based luxury marque will also launch the M5 Touring (wagon) version.

In the Philippines, BMW, under SMC Asia Car Distributors Corporation, is selling the M2 Coupe and the M4 Coupe Competition. A local launch for the next-gen M5 has yet to be declared, but we’re hoping it will happen soon.
