Brembo to acquire Ohlins Racing

MANILA: Brake manufacturer Brembo will fully acquire Öhlins Racing, one of the most popular producers of high-performance suspension systems for the aftermarket, motorsport, and original equipment segments.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What other companies has Brembo acquired in the past?

Brembo has previously acquired companies like SBS Friction, J.Juan, and Marchesini.
  • When is the completion of Brembo’s acquisition of Öhlins Racing?

Brembo’s acquisition of Öhlins Racing will be completed in early 2025.
  • The aforementioned acquisition plan of the Sweden-based suspension manufacturer was facilitated through an agreement between Brembo and Tenneco, the American company that previously held ownership of Öhlins Racing.

“Öhlins is a strong fit for Brembo. It is a world-renowned brand, with a solid business and an unrivaled reputation, both on the racetrack and the road,” Brembo Executive Chairman Matteo Tiraboschi said.

“We welcome Öhlins to our group as a great opportunity to expand our offering for the automotive market. With this addition, we take another step forward in our strategy to provide integrated intelligent solutions to our customers, leveraging synergies across key technologies in the vehicle’s corner,” Tiraboschi added.

Notably, the deal marks the largest corporate buyout in Brembo’s history, with a purchase value of $405 million (around P23 billion). For now, the deal is subject to customary regulatory approvals, which are expected to be done by early 2025.

Regardless of coming under new management, Öhlins says it will remain committed to developing new suspension technologies. Specifically, it is poised to produce the next iteration of its mechatronic suspension for both road-going and race-spec vehicles.

The said direction for the suspension company, meanwhile, will help contribute towards Brembo’s mission of becoming a “solution provider for future mobility.”

Moreover, the brake manufacturer’s procurement of Öhlins Racing signifies its continued investments in car and motorcycle racing. Brembo’s previous acquisitions also point towards the high-performance market, with companies such as the Danish SBS Friction, J.Juan in Spain, and wheel manufacturer Marchesini coming under its wing.

“As we join forces with Brembo, we are excited to unlock new growth opportunities and leverage our respective strengths and assets to drive innovation and deliver even greater value to our customers and employees,” Chief Executive Officer of Öhlins Racing Tom Wittenschlaeger said.

To note, Öhlins boasts a strong involvement in motorsport. The company has supplied its suspension systems and components to the likes of Formula One, the MotoGP World Championship, and NASCAR, among others.
