Button-less Interior, Future of Cars says VW
MANILA: Yes, you read it right, Volkswagen is planning to change the entire experience of sitting in the car. The company has high hopes and wants to create such a technology that can be integrated into future cars that are both drivable and easy to understand. Unlike other automakers who are busy creating concepts that look futuristic and hold such technologies that are both difficult to maintain and understand. Volkswagen on the other side is busy making the inside spec smooth and hassle free.
Well, the German behemoth has already unveiled its Volkswagen Golf R Touch concept at the Consumer Electronics Show, held last year at Las Vegas. Wherein the company revealed its desire to create a button-free cabin area. The 2.0L turbocharged machine showcased a cabin area that created a buzz at the event. To be precise, the central console, instrument binnacle and the lower end of the console were replaced by a touchscreen display.
The instrument panel was replaced by a big rectangular touch display that informed the driver about the car's fuel economy, temperature, navigation, date and time, and many more useful information. The one on the central console was a 12.8-inch 2560 x 1700 touchscreen followed by a multi-touch slider bar. Lastly, facing the gear shaft was an 8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, tasked to control audio system and climate control function. In addition, to all this, the concept vehicle was also equipped with a gesture control sensor, that could control vital functions like audio system volume and track to play, and sunroof operations. So, in all VW presented a car with no buttons and all the switches being replaced by touch sensitive elements.
Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Volkswagen head of development said at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show that the company is under process to say bye-bye to the conventional button system followed by the car makers from decades. But take a note that going button-less does not mean a touch spill all over but also includes voice control and gesture sensing.
After seeing the Golf R Touch, we can expect something stunning coming down the way from the VW group. No offense to Elon Musk but Tesla should prepare itself for some tough future competition.
