Cars that Can Read Your Mind, Jaguar Land Rover New Creation
MANILA: Imagine a non-living thing having a sixth sense and that brings the certainty of your life! To some, it may sound magical and to some this may be scary. But this is soon going to be a reality as Jaguar-Land Rover has disclosed that they are in the process of developing new crash mitigation system that involves brainwaves. The system would be called as Sixth Sense system and aims to decline the number of accidents that are caused due to stressed or distracted driving.
"We believe some of the technologies currently being used in aerospace and medicine could help improve road safety and enhance the driving experience. The car is becoming more intelligent and more able to utilize cutting-edge sensors. These research projects are investigating how we could exploit this for the benefit of our customers and other road users." said Dr Wolfgang Epple, Jaguar Land Rover Director of Research and Technology.
The obvious question is how does it work? The Mind Sense attempts to read brainwaves of a driver to determine stress, fatigue or if he is daydreaming. Presently, the most popular method for monitoring brainwaves is close to the source using sensors affixed to a headband but, this is not so practical in a vehicle. So, Jaguar Land Rover is exploring the method which is already used by NASA to check pilot's concentration. This might include detecting brainwaves through the sensors that are implanted in the steering wheel.
Jaguar-Land Rover is also working on a 'wellness seat' wherein the sensors would be placed in the seat that would monitor driver's breathing and heartbeat, and if the sensors communicate that driver is not alert and attentive than the car will take preventive measures to avoid an accident. Thus, “it has become quite obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”
