Chrysler teases all-electric future with Halcyon Concept

MANILA: Chrysler has unveiled the Halcyon Concept, a car that would give the brand’s fans a peek at its all-electric future.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What charging technology could we see in the Chrysler Halcyon Concept?

Per Chrysler, the Halcyon Concept could use Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer to wirelessly charge the electric car.
  • What sustainable materials were used in the interior of the Chrysler Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer?

The Chrysler Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer uses sustainable materials like recycled PET bottles and post-consumer music CDs.
  • According to Chrysler, the Halcyon Concept embraces sustainability-driven exterior and interior design. It also mirrors the car’s goal of allowing driving with full autonomy paired with personalized driving experiences and futuristic technology.

This, Chrysler explained, expands on the brand’s “Harmony in Motion” ethos of customer-focused seamless connectivity and hopes to capture the interests of car buyers who are not yet biting on what companies like Tesla have to offer.

“The Chrysler Halcyon Concept creates a level of serenity that fully represents the Halcyon name. The Halcyon showcases innovative and sustainable mobility solutions that embrace technology and offer value to customers while delivering Harmony in Motion,” Chrysler brand Chief Executive Officer Chris Feuell said.

“The Chrysler Halcyon Concept brings to life a fully electric tomorrow through new technology suites from Stellantis that integrate with simple and pure aerodynamic design and a seamless, connected, and immersive cockpit experience,” he added.

    Streamlined exterior

The Chrysler Halcyon Concept boasts a streamlined, aerodynamic exterior. The concept car sports a thin, clean, cross-car front LED headlamp and a new LED-lit Chrysler wing logo. Its windshields notably extend out to the edges of the front end, elongating the cockpit to create a wide, sweeping view.

Its flanks wear thin, blade-like side mirrors with cameras while the doors — which open autonomously — have no handles. It rides on lightweight, machine-faced, 22-inch wheels that boast a unique turbine-shaped design, with center caps accented by the new interpretation of the Chrysler wing logo. They are shod in low-rolling resistance 255/35R22 Pirelli rubbers.

At the back, the Chrysler Halcyon Concept dons an LED-lit Chrysler wing logo. A so-called water line emphasizes the width and shoulders of the car while its Active Aero Technology incorporates a sliding rear lower diffuser, which was created from lightweight composite material. Found here as well is a spoiler and air suspension to enhance efficiency and driving dynamics of the concept car.

    Sustainable, immersive cabin

The Chrysler Halcyon Concept boasts an interior that is made mainly — around 95 percent — of sustainable materials. Despite the use of such raw components, the cabin remains immersive and seamlessly connected.

For example, the concept’s reverse-yoke-designed steering wheel’s center Chrysler wing logo (as well as other trims in the cabin) are made from crushed and 100-percent recycled composite material sourced from post-consumer music CDs.

Meanwhile, the laser-pattern Solar White suede used on the upper seat and door areas is made from 73 percent PET bottles.

Chrysler added that Polyester, 100 percent recycled Mélange Heather, and fabric also accents the interior.

At its center is a cross-car pillar-to-pillar transparent display. Complementing the lengthy screen is a stowable 15.6-inch console screen that can be rotated for either portrait or landscape orientation. Per Chrysler, the stashable display can be fully controlled by voice recognition commands, eliminating the need for driver input.

Taking things up a notch is an augmented-reality full-screen head-up display (HUD). Here, the driver can check out information like speed, charge status, and more.

Like most modern-day electric vehicles, the Chrysler Halcyon Concept has also been slapped with artificial intelligence — allowing the driver to ask the vehicle anything. According to Chrysler, the “STLA Brain technology delivers over-the-air (OTA) updates with the latest technology and features to keep the concept fresh, and the Stellantis AI system allows the concept to diagnose issues and communicate OTA solutions without visiting a dealership.”

    Wireless charging, unlimited range

Chrysler envisions groundbreaking innovations with the Halcyon Concept. As an example, the American carmaker revealed that it plans to take advantage of innovative Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer technology to wirelessly recharge electric vehicles.

The said technology works when electric cars travel over specially equipped, dedicated road lanes. As a result, this promises unlimited range and travel from destinations without the need for a charger, charge cord, or charge stations.

Further, the Chrysler Halcyon Concept also looks to incorporate breakthrough Lyten 800-volt batteries. In line with the concept car’s sustainable direction, the said electric vehicle batteries do not use nickel, cobalt, or manganese, resulting in an estimated 60 percent lower carbon footprint than today’s best-in-class batteries.

“The Chrysler Halcyon Concept is the latest in a steady progression of futuristic concepts representing the brand’s electrification transformation. Previously, the brand revealed the Chrysler Portal Concept in 2017, the Chrysler Airflow Concept in 2022, and the Chrysler Synthesis Cockpit Demonstrator in 2023,” the company wrote in a press release.

“Chrysler will launch the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle in 2025 and will feature an all-electric portfolio in 2028. The Chrysler Halcyon Concept reinforces the brand’s commitment to the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 plan, which cultivates the electrified and more efficient propulsion systems that will enable Stellantis to cut its global carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2030 and to lead the transportation industry by achieving net carbon zero by 2038,” it added.
