Could this be the 2020 Mazda2?

MANILA: Mazda2 might be the smallest car that the Japanese automaker has in its portfolio, however, the cute little hatchback has always gathered some large sales number across the planet. Its curvaceous design philosophy along with Mazda’s trademark sensuous appearance has provided the Mazda2 with an x-factor that other cars in the segment have always lacked. Bosting the same appearance for some time now, the Mazda2 has sure been due for an update, albeit a minor one. And guess what? We might just have had a sneak peek at the front fascia of the 2020 Mazda2.

What looks like an accessories brochure for the 2020 Mazda2, flaunts a part of the front fascia of the hatchback. Looking at the updated Mazda2, we find that the hatchback now features a front end that seems to be inspired by the elder sibling, the Mazda3. There new slimmer headlamps and a revisited bumper. Moreover, the fog lamps are nowhere to be seen, just like on the Mazda3.

With the front end of what could indeed be the 2020 Mazda2 showing similarities with the bigger Mazda3, we expect the rear end of the hatchback to also boast some updates in the form of revamped tail lamps and bumper. On the inside as well, the 2020 Mazda2 might come sporting a minimalistic cabin, again similar to the bigger Mazda3.

In terms of mechanicals, the 2020 Mazda2 is speculated to ditch the 1.5-litre SkyActiv-G in favour of a smaller 1.3-litre unit that would make 93 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 123 Nm. A six-speed automatic transmission should be sending the power to the wheels. The 1.5-litre SkyActiv-D turbo-diesel four-cylinder motor, on the other hand, is expected to once again make its way to the Japanese hatchback. The diesel-fed mill is said to still make the same 106 PS of maximum power along with a peak torque of 250 Nm as before. Transmission is also expected to be the same six-speed automatic unit.

With the first leak already out, we should witness more of them as time goes by. Just in case the automaker has the 2020 Mazda2 already ready at its facilities, we might see the hatchback in the flesh at the upcoming 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, which is set to transpire in the month of October, later this year.
