DOTr breaks ground for Quezon Ave. and East Ave. subway stations
MANILA: After a groundbreaking ceremony led by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday, two new stations for the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) are now officially being constructed.

Digging and construction for the tunnel and underground stations started on Sunday. Meanwhile, the drilling of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) will be done within the fourth quarter of 2024.
The “build-only” contract includes the construction of a 3.1-kilometer tunnel railway and two underground stations that will connect commuters to the central business district, government offices, and private institutions in Quezon City.
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista stated during the groundbreaking ceremony that the MMSP will not only offer comfortable transportation but also create jobs. He said that the project will be “affordable, safe, sustainable, and accessible.”
Bautista also expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the financing package that made it possible for the Philippines to build its first subway train system.
The DOTr started the construction of the MMSP in January by commencing the tunneling for CP 101, which involves the construction of a depot in Valenzuela City, as well as three stations.
The Metro Manila Subway, which is hailed as the “crown jewel” of the country’s public transport system, will traverse eight cities and run from Valenzuela City to FTI-Bicutan in Parañaque City with an extension line to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City.
The first underground railway system in the country will have a 33.1-kilometer route and 17 stations. It aims to reduce the travel time between Valenzuela City and Pasay City from one hour and 38 minutes to only 45 minutes.
Once operational, the railway system can accommodate up to 519,000 passengers per day.
