Yes, the San Juanico Bridge remains passable despite the rehabilitation works.Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 8 Director Allan Borromeo said that the ongoing works include tightening of high-tension bolts and painting works on structural steel. The repair works cost P84.7 million.
The 2.16-kilometer-long bridge remains passable despite the rehabilitation works, which began in March and are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The DPWH Bureau of Design and Bureau of Research and Standards conducted non-destructive testing (NDT) on the San Juanico Bridge for evaluation of bridge condition, corrosion inspection, and monitoring of bridge steel components.
“NDT testing is done to check the compressive strength and other properties of concrete from the existing structure, establish baseline structural condition, and identify any existing problem that may cause problems in the future,” Borromeo explained.
The San Juanico Bridge was constructed in 1969 and was completed in 1973. Since the bridge is almost 50 years old, a major repair is necessary to ensure safety among motorists.
