eBoost Trailer Brake Concept by Ford reduces braking distance by 20%
MANILA: The folks at GM seem to be working at a more than optimal efficiency as the automaker is rolling out new models like Mach-E, updated Ranger pickup trucks, and some advanced technologies like the recently previewed eBoost Trailer Brake Concept. The tech allows a truck coupled with a trailer to stop in a distance which is shorter by 20% than the stopping distance without the tech.
According to the tests conducted by GM, the eBoost braking system enables the truck and trailer to stop 40 feet earlier, which is claimed to be a distance 20% shorter than the stopping distance measured with the eBoost tech turned on. "This advanced trailer braking technology is yet another example of GM’s leadership and a hint at what’s possible in the future", said Global Product Programs vice president Tim Herrick.
The system includes a seven-pin trailer wire connector and software that helps the truck and the trailer in communicating with one another. The system not only improves stability but also reduces trailer sway. Interestingly, GM fitted the test vehicle with upgraded rotors, brake callipers, and tyres in order to achieve the feat. While the concept doesn't comprise of something groundbreaking, the fact that the Chevrolet and GMC trucks already incorporate the needed components to make this concept a reality is a piece of pleasant news.
GM also mentioned that the American automaker "revolutionized the towing space with their industry-exclusive technology available on their full-size pickups", and wants to "inspire technology partners needed to make the benefits a reality for truck and trailer owners in the future". Moreover, the American automaker also aims at "setting a new industry standard that will enable technologies like this in the future". You can watch the eBoost Trailer Brake Concept in action here.
