Electric trucking: Chevrolet Silverado EV revealed

MANILA: Chevrolet unveiled in the US the Silverado EV, an electric version of its popular full-size pickup truck. 

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV will be initially launched with 2 configurations, the WT (Work Truck) variant and the flagship RST First Edition model. Both will offer standard and advanced safety features.

Among the highlights of the Chevrolet Silverado EV RST First Edition is the Multi-Flex Midgate. This feature expands the truck’s cargo capability by removing the partition between the pickup bed and cabin. Seating for rear passengers can either be retained or folded entirely. 

An available tonneau cover allows items such as lumber or a kayak to be loaded into a fully lockable, weatherproof storage compartment.

Chevrolet claims that the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado RST First Edition will also feature Super Cruise, a hands-free driver-assistance technology that can enable drivers to travel hands-free on more than 200,000 miles (321,000 kilometers) of compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV RST and WT both promise an estimated range of 400 miles (643 kilometers) of range on a full charge. Both trucks pack 664hp and 780 lb-ft (1,000Nm) of torque in available max power Wide Open Watts Mode on RST, enabling an estimated zero-to-100 kph time of less than 4.5 seconds. 

Standard DC fast charging of up to 350kW can be had for both variants of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV. The trucks can provide 10.2kW of offboard power, and pack a maximum trailering weight of 10,000 pounds (4,300 kilograms) and 1,300 pounds (589 kg) of payload. 

The Chevrolet Silverado EV is underpinned by the Ultium Platform, which is the foundation of General Motors' (GM) EV strategy and vision for a zero-emissions future.

A new body architecture, which efficiently leverages the available 24-module Ultium battery pack as a part of the fundamental structure, enables the vehicle’s impressive range.

The chassis is designed with independent front and rear suspensions, with power transferred to the available 24-inch wheels on RST via front- and rear-drive motors that compose the e4WD system. Automatic Adaptive Air Suspension enables the vehicle to be raised or lowered up to two inches. 

Four-wheel steering capability reduces the turning radius at lower speeds for greater maneuverability in parking lots, and enhances handling and stability at higher speeds, particularly when towing a trailer.

The interior of the Chevrolet Silverado EV features digital driver displays and infotainment screens. The pickup will use Ultifi, a new Linux-based software platform. Developed in-house at GM, it separates the vehicle’s software from the hardware to enable rapid and frequent software updates.
