GM to provide power unit for Andretti Cadillac F1 entry starting 2028

MANILA: General Motors (GM) will officially be a Formula 1 power unit manufacturer starting in the 2028 season.

The new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be driven by a GM power unit, whose prototype technology is currently undergoing development and testing.

“With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world,” GM President Mark Reuss stated.

Andretti’s application to join the Formula One World Championship was approved by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile in October.

The development of an F1 power unit will help GM advance its expertise in high-efficiency internal combustion engines, electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, and advanced controls and software systems.

For over a century, GM and Cadillac have involved themselves in motorsports to test their race car technologies and see if these can be applied to their production vehicles. One of the most notable lineups that incorporate learnings from track to road is Cadillac’s V-Series performance portfolio which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Cadillac also developed a 5.5-liter dual overhead camshaft V8 engine for the 2023 International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) and World Endurance Championship races. This powertrain helped Cadillac Racing place third at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and bag championships at the IMSA Grand Touring Prototype.
