Hyundai Ioniq Rolls Out with its Three Powertrain Configuration
MANILA: As the Countdown for the New York Auto Show begins, the South Korean automaker has announced that it will show Hyundai Ioniq three-powertrain configuration at the show to accomplish its plans to sell as much green cars by 2020.
This eco-friendly hatchback was already revealed at the Geneva Motor Show with the European-configuration and now it's time for the all-new Hyundai Ioniq models to get staged for the US auto market. As we have seen at the Geneva show that the European models are packed with the same drivetrain as the south Korean models, details of US-specs are yet to be revealed at the show. One thing which is certain that it will be offered in the same three variants namely, plug-in Hybrid, Hybrid and Fully Electric.
While the all-electric Ioniq is taking aim at other EVs like the Nissan Leaf and Ford Focus EV, the plug-in Hybrid version will strive to beat the Toyota Prius plug-in model topping the fuel-efficiency with over 23 kmpl. But if the rendered Toyota Prius is confirmed to be the plug-in Hybrid with the range of over 40 km, Hyundai might have to do something extraordinary to excel in its plans.
In Europe, the Ioniq EV features a bulky electric motor paired with a single-speed transmission and a 28 kWh lithium-ion battery while Ioniq PHEV version includes 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine combined with the 60 hp electric motor and a 8.9 kWh battery pack. Ioniq Hybrid is also packed with the same petrol unit but with a 40 hp electric motor.
While the US specs are yet to be revealed at the New York Auto Show, Hyundai is expecting to get a shooting range of over 177 km for the Ioniq EV in US.
