Iconic Volkswagen Kombi to make PH comeback in Q3
MANILA: The iconic Volkswagen Multivan Kombi is set to make its comeback in the Philippine market by the third quarter of 2021.
The Kombi is Volkswagen’s first, most famous, and most beloved van. The “hippie van” has also become one of the most revered models of the brand, next to the Beetle. It was originally produced to celebrate shared experiences and was commonly used for road trips with friends or families.
In 2020, the Kombi marked its 70th year in the industry. Its concept was developed by Dutch businessman Ben Pon in 1949 and since then has become the world’s all-time best-selling multi-van, topping the 13-million-unit sales mark in May 2020.
The Kombi first became available in the country in the late 1950s and gained popularity in 1970 when it registered a total of 6,100 units sold. In that year, Volkswagen became the top-selling brand in the local automobile market.
The Kombi was widely used by Filipino families and businesses, making it the iconic van of the ‘60s and ‘70s “flower power” era. It has also made its mark in local pop culture. The Kombi is best known for its exceptional design that features a low, flat floor and a roomy interior that can accommodate up to eight people.
Amid a wide range of contemporary van models in the local market, the Volkswagen Multivan Kombi is geared to reclaim its place in the Philippine streets. The updated version is expected to provide more exciting road trips while bringing nostalgia of personal memories and culture-defining history.
