KEY TAKEAWAYS
When will the production version of the ID. Aero hit the market soon?
The production version for China is set to go on sale in the second half of 2023.Aside from the ID. Aero, what are the other members of Volkswagen's ID. family?
The ID. family is composed of the ID.3, the ID.4, the ID.5, the ID.6, and the ID. Buzz.“With the ID. Aero show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID. family. A car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of over 600 kilometers, an extraordinary amount of space and a premium interior. With our Accelerate strategy, we are intensively driving forward the electrification of our model range. Following the ID.4, this model will be our next global car for Europe, China, and the US,” Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Ralf Brandstatter stated.
The concept vehicle is almost five meters long and was built using aerodynamic design principles. The roof slopes to the rear in coupe style and helps the vehicle achieve a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.23. Additionally, Volkswagen's modular electric drive matrix (MEB) provides extended wheelbase, short overhangs, and roomy interior. A powerful lithium-ion battery with a net energy content of 77kWh is fitted in the ID. Aero. The vehicle can travel up to 620 kilometers, thanks to the interaction of the efficient driving system and the excellent aerodynamic properties, making it suitable for long trips.
With the soon-to-be-produced ID. Aero concept car, Volkswagen is ramping up its electric offensive in China as part of its Accelerate plan. The production version of the ID. Aero will be the fourth fully electric model series in China after the ID.33, ID.43, and ID.63. There are two versions proposed, one for each Volkswagen joint venture. Based on its regional strategy, Volkswagen is striving to become China's leading provider of eco-friendly vehicles. At least every second vehicle sold in China will be an electric vehicle by 2030, according to plans.
Volkswagen is advancing its electric offensive worldwide on the "Way to Zero." As the new ID. flagship model, the ID. Aero will be made available worldwide in the future, not just in China but also in Europe and North America.
The ID. Aero is the first sedan in the premium midsize segment to adapt the ID. family's aesthetic. The front end and roof of the vehicle were designed aerodynamically to ensure the best possible airflow across it. The separation edge and slightly drawn-in rear end soothe the air flow. The 22-inch two-tone wheels have a turbine-inspired design and are incorporated flush into the wheel housings. Illuminated touch surfaces in place of traditional door handles reduce drag significantly. The prominent tornado line and the downward-sloping roof line define the design at the top of the silhouette. Above the tornado line is where the ID. Aero's strong shoulder section is located. The contour lines give the electric sedan a flatter appearance and a dynamic impression.
The Polar Light Blue Metallic paintwork on the ID. Aero concept car features color pigments that produce a golden shimmer effect under appropriate lighting conditions. The roof is given a high-gloss black color to contrast with the car's body.
The ID. honeycombs that characterize the ID. family are present on the front end. A unique design element of the ID. Aero is the horizontal split of the front into two sections in the bumper. Another distinguishing feature that sets the ID. Aero apart is a thin light strip that wraps into the wings and side panels and runs horizontally across the front of the car above the IQ. Light LED matrix headlights and out to the left and right of the illuminated Volkswagen badge. This light strip continues optically to the rear with a few breaks. A stunning dark light strip and LED tail light clusters with a honeycomb structure are featured on the prominent rear end to create a distinctive appearance.
Volkswagen's MEB architecture is suitable for vehicles of all shapes and sizes, as shown by the ID. Aero. It can be applied in any vehicle type, from small SUVs and minibuses to spacious sedans. The MEB truly realizes the potential of electric mobility by enabling long ranges, the highest level of digital connectivity, and over-the-air update capability.
