Lamborghini details driving features of LB744, the marque's first hybrid supercar

MANILA: Lamborghini provides an insight into the driving dynamics of the first V12 HPEV — High Performance Electrified Vehicle — hybrid super sports car just a few days before its debut. The new vehicle, code-named LB744, is intended to provide the driver with a level of assurance and connection with the vehicle never previously felt. It is conceived and developed to give absolute thrill and control in all circumstances and in all grip conditions.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What powers the Lamborghini LB744?

A 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 in the middle, three electric motors, two of which are mounted on the front e-axle, and one integrated into the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, powers the LB744. A total of 900hp is produced by the powertrain.
  • How many driving models does the Lamborghini LB744 feature?

These 13 dynamic settings highlight the LB744's various personalities and potential depending on the circumstance and the type of road, or track, on which it is driven.
  • The architecture and balance of the vehicle — the cutting-edge approach to the chassis and aerodynamic design, and the new hybrid powertrain, which enables the introduction of new driving modes, including zero-emission 4WD, for a total of 13 distinct driving experiences — are the innovations that place the Lamborghini LB744 at the pinnacle of its category.

    Lamborghini LB744 Hybrid Powertrain, Horsepower

The car has a layout that is unprecedented: a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 in the middle, three electric motors, two of which are mounted on the front e-axle, and one integrated into the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, which is positioned for the first time behind the combustion engine and transverse to the V12. A new lithium-ion battery with high specific power that powers the electric motors is now located in the tunnel, which has historically been used for the gearbox since the Countach era.

A total of 900hp is produced by the powertrain.

    Lamborghini LB744 Weight Saving

The new architecture allows for optimal weight distribution (44% at the front and 56% at the rear), bringing them closer to the center of gravity and optimizing the length of the wheelbase, resulting in a perfect balance that makes the LB744 extremely agile and effective both on the road and in the curves of a circuit. This capability is also enhanced by the increased stiffness of the anti-roll bars (+11% at the front and +50% at the rear), and by the reduced steering ratio (-10% compared to the Aventador Ultimae): an approach already successfully tested on the Huracán STO. The LB744’s capabilities are complemented by the four-wheel steering system, which contributes significantly to the sensation of a car that is agile, responsive and compact but at the same time stable and precise, and by the specially developed Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires featuring a more generous front footprint.

The chassis also makes a substantial contribution to the vehicle dynamics. The Lamborghini LB744 is the first Lamborghini to be equipped with the new aviation-inspired monofusolage, an ultra-lightweight integral carbon fiber structure (weighing 10% less than the Aventador chassis) that combines high performance in energy absorption with increased torsional stiffness (+25% compared to the Aventador), making the LB744 exceptionally stable and contributing to the car’s overall feeling of compactness and responsiveness.

    Lamborghini LB744 Torque Vectoring

Due to the e-axle, Lamborghini launches the Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo 2.0 system and introduces electric torque vectoring for the first time in company history with the LB744. By evenly transferring torque to each wheel and collaborating with the four-wheel steering system, electric torque vectoring improves the car's agility in tight corners as well as its stability in fast turns.

What the new torque vectoring system also does is intervene on the brakes only when absolutely essential, in contrast to conventional systems, to maximize efficiency and offer a more natural driving style in addition to an even greater level of performance. The rear electric motor and e-axle help with deceleration while braking, which relieves pressure on the brakes and recharges the battery.

    Lamborghini LB744 Braking

To respond to conditions requiring the greatest levels of performance, the brake cooling system and braking system have both been updated. The vehicle has the most recent CCB Plus technology (Carbon Ceramic Brakes Plus). In place of the previous Aventador Ultimae's 400x38mm discs, the front calipers now have ten pistons rather than six. The rear calipers have four pistons and 390x32mm discs (in place of the previous 380x38mm). For improved braking performance, temperature control, and acoustic comfort, discs are wrapped in a friction layer.

    Lamborghini LB744 Driving Modes

Recharge, Hybrid, and Performance, which can be combined with the Città (City), Strada, Sport, and Corsa modes, are the three new dedicated driving modes that make their debut alongside the hybrid system. These 13 dynamic settings highlight the LB744's various personalities and potential depending on the circumstance and the type of road, or track, on which it is driven.

Città, for instance, is a zero-emission driving mode that is designed for city driving. If the lithium-ion battery that drives the electric motors needs to be recharged but there are no charging stations nearby, the V12 steps in to quickly complete the recharge (Recharge mode). For instance, this enables electric mode access to historic city centers with pollution limits. Maximum comfort is provided by the suspension system, traction control, and gearbox, while Città is the most fuel-efficient mode with a 180 CV maximum power limit due to reduced aerodynamic drag.
