What are the notable sales statistics Lamborghini reached this Q3 2022?
Deliveries of Lamborghini from January to the end of September reached 7,430 units (+8% on the same period in 2021). All three of the macro regions, Americas, Asia Pacific and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) have grown proportionately. How has Lamborghini marked the precedent to its hybridization by 2023?
There have been many new initiatives in 2022 in honor of the last year celebrating the internal combustion engine: from the debut of the Huracán Tecnica, to the recent presentation of the Urus restyling with the Urus S version and the high-performance derivative, the Urus Performante, which set an SUV record at the famous and challenging Pikes Peak. The Sant'Agata firm bid farewell to the "pure" V12 combustion engine — after posting its best nine months in its history in 2022 — in anticipation of the historic change phase set to begin next year with the hybridization of the complete range by 2024.
Deliveries of Lamborghini from January to the end of September reached 7,430 units (+8% on the same period in 2021). All three of the macro regions, Americas, Asia Pacific and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) have grown proportionately. The reference market continues to comprise the USA (+8%), followed by Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau (+5%), Germany (+16%), the UK (+20%) and Japan (+26%).
Turnover for the first nine months reached €1.93 billion, up 30.1% compared with the same period in 2021. Operating profit also showed an increase of 68.5%, standing at €570 million.
The corresponding Return on Sales (RoS) was 29.6% after 22.8% in the previous year period. The increase in profitability was driven by a rise in volumes; by the growth in average revenue per car (thanks to the product mix and increased customizations); and the favorable trend in exchange rates.
Stephan Winkelmann, the Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, commented: “These consistently rising figures show just how strong Lamborghini is today. We have an order portfolio that already covers the first quarter of 2024, and this allows us to work with peace of mind, looking thoughtfully ahead to the challenges facing us in the future, such as the first step towards hybridization from 2023.”
Paolo Poma, Managing Director and CFO of Automobili Lamborghini, added: “The current situation continues to be marked by the instability of macroeconomic variables, while the company is showing its resilience through the growth of all the main business and financial metrics. We expect to close the financial year better than ever.”
Of all the vehicles, the 2022 Lamborghini Huracán experienced the biggest rise, delivering 2,378 units globally, an 11% increase over the same time last year.
On the other hand, the 2022 Lamborghini Urus set a real sales record in absolute terms, delivering 4,834 units between January and September (+7%), the most Super SUVs ever delivered in the first nine months since their introduction in 2018.
The production cycle for the V12 model, the Aventador, came to an end in September. The final Aventador rolled off the assembly line in front of the sentiments of those who, since 2011, have worked on and contributed to the success of one of the most iconic models in Lamborghini history.
The Huracan Tecnica, the next-generation rear-wheel-drive V10 from Lamborghini, is designed for drivers desiring for fun and lifestyle perfection on both the road and the track. The Tecnica's moniker symbolizes the Huracan's enhanced technological capability which is clearly recognizable with its new aesthetics accentuating increased aerodynamics for boosted performance, stability, and ease of usage, particularly on a circuit.
The powertrain, which takes its engine from the Huracan STO and gains 30cv over the Huracan EVO rear-wheel drive (RWD), produces 565Nm of torque at maximum 6,500 rpm and accelerates from zero to 100kph in 3.2 seconds.
The lightweight Tecnica's reworked Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (LDVI) system and specially optimized driving modes with specific suspension setup, rear-wheel direct steering, and innovative brake cooling improvements let the driver enjoy the ideal Huracan for every situation. The Huracan Tecnica uses its skills and abilities to bring the best of both worlds — an eloquently versatile super sports for road and track.
At higher revs, the increased power is complemented by a crisper engine sound, while the Tecnica delivers enhanced acoustic comfort within the cockpit.
The 2022 Lamborghini Tecnica has rear-wheel steering with direct steering ratio and torque vectoring, as well as a modified Performance Traction Control System (P-TCS) and a Tecnica-specific suspension setup. Every dynamic system on the Tecnica is tuned to deliver a widely diverse response to each situation, depending on the drive mode selected: Strada, Sport, or Corsa.
In Strada, the torque vectoring and P-TCS give stability and maneuverability, while the rear-wheel steering provides stability and maneuverability. The engine and gearbox have been calibrated for smooth daily drive in every setting.
In Sport mode, the rear-wheel steering's improved oversteer and the enhanced P-TCS's slip threshold provide the optimum driving pleasure, while torque vectoring maintains the Tecnica's agility and responsiveness in the driver's hands. At the press of the pedal, the highly responsive powertrain ignites, and the seven-speed gearbox gives a precise and evocative shift.
In Corsa mode, the Tecnica responds to the pilot's every input with incredible precision, with the naturally aspirated Lamborghini engine's howl serving as an ardent reminder of the car's track abilities. The Tecnica demonstrates maximum precision and agility from all systems via the LDVI, including optimum lateral and longitudinal grip from the torque vectoring and P-TCS, respectively.
New brake cooling management, based on Lamborghini's track-based expertise, delivers continuously improved braking performance on both the road and the track, resulting in exceptional performance. The carbon ceramic brakes from Tecnica feature specially made cooling deflectors and caliper ducts that direct airflow into the discs to maximize heat dissipation and lower down brake fluid temperatures and brake pedal elongation. The reduced disc temperatures also help minimize brake pad consumption.
Along with the new Urus Performante for those wanting the highest level of sporting performance, the Lamborghini Urus S confirms its place as the ultimate lifestyle Lamborghini super SUV with greater power, luxury versatility, and presence.
The twin-turbo V8 engine's enhanced output of 656 horsepower is equivalent to that of the Urus S' stablemate, the Performante, and results in a better weight-to-power ratio of 3.3 kilograms per horsepower. The Urus S accelerates more quickly, reaching 100 kph in 3.5 seconds and 200 kph in 12.5 seconds from a standstill.
As for the chassis, the Lamborghini Urus S is underpinned by adaptive air suspension ensures super sports driving enjoyment but smooth handling on road surfaces in Strada, Sport, Corsa, and Ego drive modes, with immediately-available torque response and body balancing according to the particular requirements of its off-road drive selectors.
Meanwhile, the off-road drive selectors Terra, Neve, and Sabbia. With the same powertrain calibration as the Urus Performante, the Lamborghini Urus S delivers optimum responsiveness and performance when required, alongside luxurious everyday driving pleasure from the Urus’ finely-tuned chassis settings.
To support its sports but opulent lifestyle attitude, and highlight the SUV’s presence in any setting, the Lamborghini Urus S makes specific and refined design improvements. The ability to customize across the range, from modest style to extreme sportiness, is made possible by a large increase in options for colors, trim, wheels, style packages, and distinctive touches.
A new front bumper design adopts more refined lines and incorporates a new matt black-painted stainless steel skid plate as standard, complemented by the black lines of the front grille. Five further style configuration options combine body color, shiny black, and carbon fiber components in shiny and matt finish, allowing markedly individual configurations for the Urus S.
A new lightweight carbon fiber painted bonnet comes with matt black air vents, with optional finishes to the vents in gloss black, body color or carbon fiber in shiny or matt finish. An optional visible carbon fiber roof lends an athletic elegance to the new Urus S.
The color and trim options for the Lamborghini Urus S' inside have been completely updated. The new Urus Performante stitching pattern is present in the new Bi-color Sportivo as well as a new Bi-color Sophisticated option.
The Bi-color Sportivo offers a more understated and fashionable usage of the complementary hue; the sophisticated black leather trim is available in new contrast color options along with sophisticated new Blu Leandro and Verde Aura in addition to tan, cream, and brown.
The Lamborghini Urus Performante made its dynamic debut before international press and dealers at Autodromo Vallelunga in Rome, Italy. The new Performante version of the Urus Super SUV once again demonstrated its capabilities in its home country on both tarmac and dirt tracks, having already established a new official standard by setting the production SUV Pikes Peak record in a time of 10:32:064 — 17 seconds faster than the previous record holder.
It delivers increased power of 666cv and sets the best weight-to-power reference in its segment with a new lightweight, aerodynamic design, chassis setup, and sporty driving dynamics with specific drive mode calibration, including the new Rally mode dedicated to the Performante version of the Urus. The Urus Performante delivers 850Nm of torque at 2,300rpm. It can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kph in just 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 306kph.
Automobili Lamborghini went back to Rome and Vallelunga for the Urus Performante's driving debut. The original Urus made its dynamic debut there in 2018. At that time, it established the standard for a new category of Super SUVs and announced the delivery of more than 21,000 Urus units worldwide over the next four years, with more than 80% of the customers being new to the Lamborghini brand. Participating media and dealers also had their first glimpse at the newly unveiled Urus S, the Super SUV model that will replace the original Urus.
Guests in Vallelunga were also able to compare the new Urus Performante's upgraded features and performance on the racetrack. They were also able to test drive the Super SUV on a specially designed rally circuit to see how fun it is to drive and how well it handles slippery roads. The Urus Performante is equipped with Pirelli tires: P Zero for 20-inch, 22-inch, and 23-inch wheels, as well as a new, semi-slick P Zero Trofeo R option designed by Pirelli and Lamborghini specifically for the characteristics of SUVs.
The Lamborghini Urus Performante features a superior styling that underlines the super sports engineering within. It features an edgy and prominent bonnet and bumper design that combines the super sports DNA with elegance. With the extensive use of composite materials, the Lamborghini Urus Performante is now the model with the highest number of carbon fiber parts in its segment.
On the inside, the Lamborghini Urus Performante comes with a Nero Cosmus black Alcantara cockpit, a new hexagonal seat stitching design, and the Performante trim. Dedicated color and trim options include extension of the Performante trim on doors, roof lining, seat backrests, and rear wall. Additional Ad Personam customization options include interior matte carbon fiber accents, red door handles, and a customized kickplate with the Ad Personam emblem.
The weight is reduced by 47kg and aerodynamic efficiency is improved and overall downforce is increased by 8%. The driver can choose among the re-engineered drive modes: Strada, Sport, Corsa, and Rally.
The famed 12-cylinder V12 engine that has propelled Lamborghini's most recognizable vehicles for nearly 60 years is being celebrated in 2022. One such V12 model is the Diablo, the first Lamborghini super sports car to be made available with four-wheel drive.
The Diablo was considered to be a series production hypercar when it first appeared because it was so far ahead of its time. The 12-cylinder engine, which was first officially unveiled in January 1990 at Lamborghini Day at the Sporting in Monte Carlo, had a displacement of 5.7 liters at first and later 6.0 liters. It had a maximum power output of nearly 600 horsepower in road versions and 655 horsepower in the GT1 Stradale model for the racetrack, of which only two examples were made.
At the end of 2022, the last Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae will be produced before the "pure" V12 combustion engine ends manufacturing. The successor to the Aventador will start using a new plug-in hybrid V12 engine the following year.
The last pure, naturally aspirated V12-powered Lamborghini that was produced in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy is an Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae Roadster in a special light blue Ad Personam color.
In 2011, the Aventador LP 700-4 made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Its name indicates its 700 horsepower and permanent four-wheel drive. It is powered with a new Lamborghini V12 60-degree powerplant and features new technologies, a unique, timeless design, and exhilarating performance.
During its launch, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephan Winkelmann described the Aventador as “a jump of two generations in terms of design and technology, with an exceptional package of unique, innovative technologies and performance that is simply overwhelming.”
Since its launch, the Aventador has had more than eight model derivatives and 11,465 units sold worldwide. Over 10 one-off and limited-edition Aventadors were released, set track records, bagged several awards, were used as the subject for artworks, and were featured in films and video games.
Lamborghini R&D Department, led by Chief Technical Officer Maurizio Reggiani, worked closely with the Centro Stile design department in a “clean sheet” approach. The Aventador was the first of its kind in a production car — a lightweight carbon fiber single-piec monocoque weighing only 147.5kg built using Lamborghi’s RTM-Lambo process.
Automobili Lamborghini’s expertise in carbon fiber and lightweight technologies is showcased throughout the Aventador’s evolution. A team of “flying doctors” was formed for the development of the Aventador, travelling across the world to perform specialist diagnostics and repairs to the carbon fiber monocoque when damaged.
The Aventador also features a unique drive mode selection system that allows the driver to modify the engine, transmission, differential, stability, and steering setup. The driver can select among the Strads, Sport, and Corsa modes.
The Aventador’s design, created by Centro Stile, offers an aeronautically-inspired super sports car. Its complex surfaces and juxtaposition of angles and surfaces, including the scissor doors reserved for V12 Lamborghinis, form a remarkable car design and a powerful piece of automotive art.
Eighty-five of Aventadors feature Ad Personam personalization by their owners. Lamborghini has created more than 200 unique colors and trims for the Aventador.
During the Monterey Car Week in 2019, street artist Skyler Grey designed an Aventador S with Lamborghini’s yellow and orange hues and an animation of running bulls. It is the first Aventador to be certified by blockchain.
In 2020, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoti teamed up with Lamborghini Centro Stile to create an Aventador S featuring his signature black and red patterns.
The Aventador was also featured in various exhibitions in Russia, Italy, and USA. The last Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae coupe to be produced was auctioned earlier this year along with a 1:1 NFT by contemporary artists Krista Kim and Steve Aoki.
In 2017, five unique Aventador Roadster S models were unveiled, featuring color palettes representing the natural elements from Japanese culture: water, earth, fire, wind, and sky. In 2021, two Aventadors in specially created colors inspired by Korean culture and flag were presented in Seoul: Green Ocno representing “warm Korean sentiment” and Blue Emera symbolizing “intelligence and wisdom.” Lamborghini also introduced an Aventador S Goodwood Special Edition featuring gray and orange Ad Personam colors with Goodwood decals and interior embroidery in 2017.
The Aventador also appeared in movies including “Batman: the Dark Knight Rises”in 2012, where Bruce Wayne (played by Christian Bale) drove an Aventador LP 700-4. The Aventador was also featured in “Transformers: Age of Extinction” in 2014.
