We are deeply saddened by what is happening in Ukraine and hope for a swift end to the hostilities in the name of democratic values.”
Turnover hit an all-time high of €1.95 billion, up by 19% from 2020. Operating profit reached new heights, thanks to efficient management and the introduction of new models. In comparison to 2018, the operating margin more than doubled, reaching 20.2%, a level of profitability consistent with the luxury industry. This outstanding achievement equates to an operating income of €393 million, a tremendous 49% increase over the previous year. Lamborghini has set an even more challenging financial goal for the coming years: to push up its profitability to between 22% and 25%. This is part of an ambitious strategic plan to include the highest investment in the company's history — €1.8 billion over the next five years, fully self-financed.
On a commercial level, 2021 was likewise the best year ever, with 8,405 units delivered internationally, representing a 13% increase versus 2020. Overall, the three macro-regions where Lamborghini can be found increased by double digits: America (+14%), Asia Pacific (+14%), and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa, +12%), which account for 34%, 27%, and 39% of global volumes, respectively.
In addition to these impressive results, Lamborghini wanted to send a clear message of support to the Ukrainian people who have been affected by the current crisis. The company arranged for a €500,000 donation to UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, which has been operating in Ukraine since 2014. This show of support was backed by a decision to halt operations in Russia.
“In recent years we have demonstrated that we have the potential and the ability to work towards excellent financial results, even when facing an exogenous variable of enormous impact such as the pandemic. The current geopolitical situation requires constant monitoring of the impact on the global economy, but we will take all necessary measures to safeguard our strategy, based on development of the next generation of products and supported by a major investment plan that will guide our growth path, further improving our financial performance, the value of our brand and our company,” Lamborghini Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer Paolo Poma stated.
In terms of sales, the United States remained in first place, moving 2,472 units. It was followed by China with 935 units, Germany with 706 units, and the United Kingdom with 564 units. Lamborghini also saw a 4% gain in sales in its home market of Italy, with 359 units sold.
The Urus super SUV emerged as the top-selling Lamborghini model, with 5,021 units sold. It was followed by the V10-powered Huracan, which witnessed a significant boost in sales to 2,586 units due to the strong push provided by the Huracán STO. Meanwhile, 798 Aventador units were shipped worldwide in 2021.
Lamborghini will reveal two innovations for the Huracán and Urus in the next months, bringing the age of internal combustion engines to a close and ushering in the age of hybridization, which will begin with the arrival of the vehicle that will replace the Aventador in 2023.
Lamborghini presented its ambitious Direzione Cor Tauri strategy at the end of last year, named after the brightest star in the constellation Taurus. While staying true to the brand's DNA, it will be a two-phase journey to an electric future. In the first phase, the shift to hybrid, the company will release its first hybrid model in 2023. It will be followed by the hybridization of the full range by 2024, resulting in a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions. The final phase, full electrification, will begin in the second half of this decade, with the launch of a fourth fully electric model to complement the hybrid lineup.
