Lexus Design Award 2022 finalists create sustainable, PWD-friendly objects

MANILA: Lexus announced the six finalists in its Lexus Design Award 2022, whose creations were selected from a total of 1,726 entries from 57 countries/regions by a panel of design experts.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What kind of objects have the Lexus Design Award 2022 finalists designed?

The Lexus Design Award finalists created objects that will help the elderly with dementia, and children with hearing and sight challenges.
  • What makes the designs of the Lexus Design Award 2022 finalists sustainable?

The finalists' designs are made from biodegradable materials, among others.
  • Finalists will receive mentorship from four creative experts. The finalists will work with the experts in developing prototypes of the contestants' design, within a budget of ¥3,000,000 yen (US$25,000) each, Lexus said in a release.

Now in its 10th edition, the Lexus Design Award continues to identify promising talents and introduce their fresh ideas to the global creative community.

"Finalists were chosen for their original solutions contributing to a better tomorrow, while articulating the Lexus brand’s three core principles — Anticipate, Innovate and Captivate..." Lexus said.

The Lexus Design Award 2022 Finalists are the following:

Chitofoam by Charlotte Böhning and Mary Lempres (from USA/Germany and USA/Norway). Chitofoam is a biodegradable packaging solution derived from the exoskeletons of mealworms that have digested polystyrene foam waste.

Hammock Wheelchair by Wondaleaf (Malaysia). The Hammock is a combination of wheelchair, forklift and hammock for reducing the manual lifting of patients by caregivers.

Ina Vibe by Team Dunamis (Nigeria). Ina Vibe is a sustainable cooking, charging and lighting product.

Rewind by Poh Yun Ru (Singapore). Rewind is a platform that leverages multi-sensory stimulation to prompt meaningful recollection for seniors with dementia.

Sound Eclipse by Kristil and Shamina (Russia). Sound Eclipse is a noise-cancelling device that reduces outside noise from outside when placed near an open window.

Tacomotive by Kou Mikuni (Japan). Tacomotive is a driving simulator for children with visual and aural difficulties.

“I was impressed by the creators’ sensitivity to real-life issues faced by individuals with disabilities and the challenges facing society, such as sustainable coexistence with nature," Lexus Design Award 2022 judge Anupama Kundoo said.

Earlier in January, the six finalists participated in a five-day workshop with four mentors: Sam Baron, Joe Doucet, Sabine Marcelis and Yosuke Hayano.

Finalists will continue working with mentors to flesh out their prototypes throughout the three months or so leading up to the Lexus Design Awards finals, in which the finalists will work with more design experts on how to make their designs a reality.
