Lexus to unveil its first fully electric vehicle during the Guangzhou Auto Show
MANILA: Lexus, the luxury brand of the Japanese automaker Toyota has just announced that it will unveil its first-ever fully electric car on November 22 during the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in China. The announcement said that the upcoming Lexus electric car has been "specifically crafted to suit the needs of audiences in China and Europe." And that the car will “further advance[s> the brand’s desire to offer a portfolio of electrified powertrain choices for diverse audiences worldwide.”
Lexus and Toyota have put aside, for the longest time, their pursuit of battery-electric models despite being one of the first global automobile companies that produce low carbon emission vehicles. Instead, the company has mainly been focused on developing fuel-cell technology and hybrid systems.
That seemingly has changed as Lexus will unveil its first production electric vehicle and with parent company Toyota developing EV technology including dedicated platforms and solid-state batteries. Toyota has stated its commitment to launching at least 10 battery-electric cars by 2025, with the first one to arrive by next year. Of course, some of these electric vehicles will come from Lexus, which by the way presented an EV concept during the recently concluded Tokyo Motor Show.
Lexus has not yet revealed any details about the fully electric car in terms of kind of body style or the electric model. But what we do know is that the first Lexus EV will be a derivative of an existing model. We’re making a wild guess here, but we think its likely the Lexus UX compact crossover SUV. A year ago, there was a patent for a model UX 300e that was filed by the Japanese automaker.
With only a single image to go from, we could surmise that the new Lexus fully electric vehicle will be very upfront when it comes to its electric powertrain. Basing on the picture, the slight curve on the far right, the “Electric” badge seats at the lower rear door, fore of the rear wheel arch just like the current Lexus hybrids.
