LTFRB to revoke franchise of 'non-consolidated' PUJ owners, operators

MANILA: Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Teofilo Guadiz III stated that operators of public utility jeepneys (PUJ) who did not sign up for the industry consolidation will have their franchises revoked and their units deemed colorum.

The announcement was made by the LTFRB figurehead during the Society of Philippine Motoring Journalists’ Butch Gamboa Memorial Forum last April 17.

The deadline set by the agency for operators to comply with the consolidation was April 30. After that said date, non-consolidated PUJs — regardless if they are traditional or modern — will no longer be allowed to ply their routes.

Originally, the consolidation of franchises was eyed to conclude in January 2024. However, requests of various sectoral groups prompted President Marcos Jr. to extend the deadline for three more months.

Anticipating a shortage of PUJ units, the LTFRB has issued a directive giving special permits to jeepneys from neighboring routes to temporarily serve the affected ones.
