KEY TAKEAWAYS
Where will the LTO expand its online driver’s license renewal service for OFWs next?
The next countries that will have access to the LTO online driver’s license renewal service for OFWs are the United States and some select countries in Europe and the Middle East. How can OFWs pay for their online driver’s license renewal?
Per the online driver’s license renewal pilot run in Taiwan, payments can be made through GCash.According to the agency, its expanded online portal has already processed the DL renewal of Angelito Maderia as its first OFW client. Several other Taiwan-based DL holders likewise followed suit in availing the LTO’s digital services.
“Ako po ay natutuwa dahil madali at mabilis yung naging proseso. Hindi katulung nung dati na kailangan ko pang umuwi ng Pilinas para lang makapag-renew (I am delighted because the process was fast. It is unlike the prior process where I needed to go back home to the Philippines just to renew),” Madeira said.
Additionally, the LTO shared how Madeira went through the online DL renewal steps. All he needed to upload to or acquire from the LTO online portal were the following requirements:
- Driver’s license expiring within 60 days or within two years from the date of expiration
- Active LTO Portal account with OFW’s biometric profile
- Online Comprehensive Driver's Education certification from the LTO portal
- Medical certificate provided by LTO-accredited telemedical facility
Madeira also made the payment necessary for his DL renewal through GCash. Afterward, the agency will inform the client once the renewed DL card is printed and ready for shipping.
“From the initial application of the OFW until the delivery of his license card to his appointed foreign address in Taiwan for this launch, the total process can take anywhere from three to five days,” LTO Chief Atty. Vigor Mendoza II said.
In total, 500 OFW showed up on the first day of the pilot run. Out of the said figure, 200 were served. Also, the pilot run served to test the system and gather feedback from clients in order to identify bugs.
Once the system is found to be glitch-free, the LTO says it will be expanded to cover the United States and other countries in Europe and the Middle East.
