LTO to expand online DL renewal to OFWs in Taiwan

MANILA: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will soon offer a fully online driver’s license renewal service to Filipinos living and working in Taiwan.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When is the target date for the expansion of the LTO online driver’s license renewal service to Taiwan?

The target date for the expansion of the LTO online driver’s license renewal service to Taiwan is September 2024.
  • Why did LTO decide to expand the reach of the LTO online driver’s license renewal to Taiwan?

The LTO decided to expand the reach of the LTO online driver’s license renewal to Taiwan for the benefit of Overseas Filipino Workers.
  • The initiative will be rolled out by the agency by next month (September 2024), and it is designed to benefit Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and other citizens residing in the aforementioned region. The project is likewise in line with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.'s push for digitalization in the bid to make government services more accessible and convenient to all Filipinos.

According to LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II, OFWs previously had to wait for a long time to complete their driver’s license renewals. Hopefully, the expansion of the agency’s online service abroad will help alleviate the issue.

“We hope to fully implement this within this year. Once fully implemented, this is indeed a big help to all our clients, especially OFWs, because they do not have to go to our offices or wait for their return to the Philippines to renew their driver’s license,” Mendoza said.

In a statement, Mendoza thanked the Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Mendoza for the support the transport agency gave in order to make the project a reality. Furthermore, Mendoza said the LTO is also continuously working with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) under the leadership of Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac.

The LTO, however, will not stop with just Taiwan alone. In fact, Mendoza revealed that they are working closely with DMW to expand the reach of the agency’s online services to regions such as the Middle East, Europe, the United States, and other territories with a notable Filipino population.

“Hindi lang ito sa Taiwan, buong mundo na po ito at malaking tulong ito para sa ating mga kababayan (This is not just for Taiwan but for the whole world and this is big help for our countrymen) because the driver’s license we issue is recognized worldwide,” Mendoza added.
