Mazda RX-9 may come housing an inline-six turbo
MANILA: In recent times, leaked patent filings have hinted towards an upcoming performance-oriented flagship product by Mazda. Not only that, but Mazda is also said to be preparing inline six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and come in an agreement with Lexus to share a rear-wheel-drive platform.
And now, the latest reports suggest that the upcoming Mazda RX-9 will get a turbocharged inline six-pot motor that will be capable of churning out 348 hp to 449 hp of maximum power. Also, the mill mentioned is being speculated to be a turbocharged version of the Skyactiv-X straight-six. Another interesting development comes in the form of news that the Mazda RX-9 will not use the Large Architecture. Instead, the sports car will be underpinned by a new independent platform.
As for the Large Architecture platform that is still in development, the underpinning will lay the foundation for various Mazda, Toyota and Lexus cars such as Toyota Mark X, Lexus RC, and others. Moreover, we could also see the Mazda RX-9 equipped with an exclusive rear-wheel-drive platform. Once out in the flesh, the Mazda RX-9 will take on the likes of the Toyota Supra and the Nissan 370Z.
The last when Mazda produced a car with the RX badge was in 2012 when we had the RX-8 up & running. The Japanese automaker then discontinued the car since its rotary-engine wasn't compliant with strict emission norms. Despite that, Mazda has kept working on developing a rotary-motor that can meet the new stringent emission norms and continue to the legacy. Let's see how long does Mazda take now to introduce the all-new RX-9 and revive the iconic RX lineup.
