Mitsubishi Mi-Tech Concept looks like an SUV with no roof and doors

MANILA: Mitsubishi did not disappoint to bring the ‘wow’ factor when it unveiled its Mi-Tech Concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The Mitsubishi Mi-Tech Concept is a doorless, roofless, two-seater vehicle that’s a cross between a compact SUV and a roadster.

The idea behind the Mi-Tech concept is a reimagination of the buggy. It’s a size of a compact SUV with capabilities to conquer the off-road. The concept car reinterprets Mitsubishi’s bold “Dynamic Shield” front fascia with copper accents. The dominant grille in front is flanked by T-shaped LED headlights.

The two-toned car concept has massive boxy wheel arches, which make its side profile more interesting. The absence of a roof and door adds to its unique roadster design and probably Mitsubishi’s interpretation of what a buggy would look like in the future. The rear-end of the Mi-Tech is also very interesting. The ‘T’ theme continuous to the taillights, showcased in a hexagon-shaped rear.

But what is attention-grabbing on the rear design are the four fans sitting on the place where you would usually see a windshield. These fans are there because of the powertrain—a jet-engine plug-in hybrid. The Mi-Tech is powered by four electric motors, one at each wheel for 4WD. The batteries can be charged via a plug-in or a compact gas turbine engine-generator. It has a “powerful output for its size and weight” and can run on diesel, kerosene or alcohol.

The interiors of the Mitsubishi Mi-Tech is muted in contrast to the busy exterior design. The interior is streamlined by doing away with most knobs and buttons. It does not even have the usual infotainment system that we usually see mounted at the center console. The front panel only features digital instrumentation and a massive head-up display benefitting from augmented reality tech. Elongated switches can be found at the center of the dashboard and a handgrip that doubles as a controller.

There are no plans yet to put the Mitsubishi Mi-Tech concept into production. But it does showcase where Mitsubishi is heading towards with its car manufacturing approch as the company says electrification technology is something that they would incorporate to future compact and midsize SUVs by 2022.
