Mitsubishi Montero Sport: Variants explained
We mostly know Mitsubishi because of the world famous Pajero. However, things have changed now and Mitsubishi has got a number of other vehicles that have become popular as well and are creating their own space and identity in this gigantic automobile industry. One such vehicle is the latest Mitsubishi Montero Sport.
Mitsubishi Philippines have got four variants of the Montero Sport available in the country. These include GLX 2WD 6 MT, GLS 2WD 8 AT, GLS 4WD 6 MT, and GLS Premium 2WD 8 AT. Mitsubishi Montero Sport price starts at Php 1.41 million for, you guessed it right, the base model,
i.e., the GLX 2WD 6 MT. From here the price rises all the way up to Php 1.85 million for the top-of-the-range model GLS Premium 2WD 8 MT. We are going to explain all the four variants in this story by discussing the similarities and differences between them.
Similarities
Look at the Mitsubishi Montero Sport specs of all the four variants. Each one of them is powered by the same 2.4-litre in-line 4-cylinder diesel engine with Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) and Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) System.
The latter feature integrates variable valve timing function to achieve an impressive combination of optimum power, high fuel efficiency, and low emission. This engine is tuned to produce max power of 181 PS at 3500 revs and generate a healthy torque of 430 Nm from as low as 2500 revs.
The dimensions of all the variants are also the same and so is the suspension setup - Double Wishbone with Coil Springs and Stabilizer bar at the front and 3-link with Coil Springs and Stabilizer bar at the rear. All four of the variants run of 18-inch alloy wheels with a tire configuration of 265 / 60 R18.
Climbing inside the cabin of any of the variants of the latest Mitsubishi Montero Sport you will be greeted by a 6.75-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports DVD, MP3, WMA, and MPEG4 player, iPod compatibility with Auxiliary-in and USB port, and Bluetooth connectivity.
One of the best parts about the Montero Sport is that irrespective of the variant you get, the aesthetics remain the same. Mitsubishi spent a plethora of hours designing this sporty SUV so it thought why not make it standard across the board. Following Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design philosophy,
the Montero Sport looks fantastic! We really like how the headlamps and front grille merge into each other and give a sleek and tidy appearance. We also love its tall stance from the side view. Its big tires enhance the off-road capabilities of this machine. The rear end is a bit too much, maybe, because of the weird shape of the tail lights. But overall, the Montero Sport is a handsome SUV.
These were a few main similarities among all the four variants of the SUV. Now let’s have a look at their differences.
Differences
One major difference that you’d notice and can understand by the name of the variant is the transmission. Depending on which model you pick, you have an option of either getting a 6-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Another aspect that you can easily identify by the nomenclature of the variants is the drive system. Out of the four available variants of the Montero Sport, only one is 4WD capable- GLS 4WD 6 MT and it isn’t the most expensive one.
Then comes the variation in the safety features. GLX 2WD 6 MT and GLS 2WD 8 AT, which are the starting variants, come with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, brake override system, reverse camera, and some seat bels.
Move one step up the ladder where the GLS 4WD 6 MT stays and you get some additional safety features like side, curtain and driver’s knee airbags, Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC), Selectable Rear Locking Differential, Hill Start Assist (HSA), Trailer Stability Assist (TSA), Brake Assist, and Reverse Sensor.
So, these were some of the key similarities and differences between the four variants of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Mitsubishi has divided the variants very strategically. For example, if you want to have the 4WD model,
then you can’t have an automatic gearbox. Anyways, all the four variants are available in 7 different colors - Black Mica, White Pearl, Titanium Grey, Deep Bronze Metallic, Sterling Silver Metallic, Red Metallic, and Deep Blue Pearl.
