MMDA, iAcademy to showcase MMFF’s 50-year legacy with EDSA murals

MANILA: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), in partnership with Makati-based information and communications technology school iAcademy, will soon decorate sections of EDSA with murals depicting iconic films from the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is iAcademy?

iAcademy is a Makati-based school which focuses on information and communications technology.
  • When will the official entries for the 2024 Manila Film Festival be shown?

The showing of the official entries for the 2024 Manila Film Festival is scheduled from December 25, 2024-January 7, 2025.
  • The said murals mark the 50th anniversary of the MMFF this year, and they will be painted by iAcademy students. To be featured on the murals are vibrant and nostalgic movie posters from the past 50 years of the aforementioned movie festival.

At the moment, the MMDA has yet to release the exact location for the murals, but one of the proposed areas is the stretch of EDSA from Buendia to Ayala. The said section is approximately 653 meters long.

Regardless, the MMDA and iAcademy have already signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to push forward the said project.

During the MOU signing ceremony, MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Romando Artes thanked iAcademy for its support.

“We will make EDSA nostalgic through murals of hand-painted movie posters to celebrate the rich history of MMFF,” Artes said.

The iAcademy’s Chief Operating Officer Raquel Wong, meanwhile, also expressed gratitude towards the MMDA for its trust. She likewise shared her organization’s excitement for the artistic project.

“We are excited to show that these artworks will inspire and remind everyone of the power of creative collaboration in shaping our urban environment,” Wong said.

For those unaware, the MMFF is organized yearly by the MMDA to showcase Filipino-produced films. It is usually held from Christmas Day (December 25) to New Year’s Day (January 1) and into the first weekend of January the following year.

The length of the MMFF hosts screenings of film entries. Marking the end of the festival is an awards night, which honors the best-participating films in the festival.
