MMDA says number coding still suspended as fake infographic spreads

MANILA: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) clarified that the number coding scheme is still suspended indefinitely for all types of private and public vehicles until further notice. This complies with the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) being implemented to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. The clarification of MMDA was done after an infographic was recently circulated online, saying the number coding scheme was back.

According to the agency, they did not release the infographic, which was shared by a few news, entertainment, and automotive sites. MMDA also advised everyone to check the official MMDA social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook for reliable information during the ECQ.

MMDA Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago underscored that they are continuously implementing the local travel ban in Metro Manila. Aside from this, she also added that the MMDA has suspended Pasig River Ferry Service operations since March 2020. Trucks carrying food and medical supplies are the only vehicles exempted from the travel ban in EDSA and other roads in Metro Manila.

Pialago also advised the public to verify news being circulated online to avoid falling prey to fake news.

Meanwhile, in line with the suspension of the number coding scheme of MMDA, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has enforced stricter implementation of the ECQ in Metro Manila and its nearby provinces. This involves intense monitoring of private vehicles for possible ECQ violations and the establishment of mobile checkpoints in specific locations nationwide.

For private vehicles traveling unnecessarily, the PNP will issue a ordinance violation receipt (OVR) to the drivers. Moreover, the PNP,  along with the High Patrol Group (HPG), will deploy motorcycle-riding police officers to catch private vehicles that are violating ECQ guidelines in Metro Manila.
