New Hyundai Veloster and Veloster N revealed
MANILA: For the South Korean automaker, the second-generation Veloster and Veloster N took the center stage at this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Yes, Hyundai has revealed the complete lineup of its next-generation Veloster and Veloster N with improved performance and smart styling updates.
Hyundai has upgraded the Veloster in terms of dimensions with the updated hatchback being 20mm longer and 10mm wider while the height is same as the outgoing model. With improved exterior proportions, Veloster now offers improved legroom and 15mm more headroom at the rear row.
The overall design of the Veloster has not changed much, staying between a coupe and hatchback but, with the brand’s latest design philosophy. The new changes include a waterfall grille, and three-dimensional LED tail lights with asymmetric doors and pinched rear end remain same. Considering the Veloster N, it shares a lot of design cues with i30N, featuring black and red elements on the lower bumpers and trademark Performance Blue paint scheme.
In the cabin, a colored heads-up display and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system are the new additions while the other elements of the Veloster are same as the outgoing model. Majority of the changes are done under the skin, which includes a new powertrain in the N version, e-LSD, larger performance brakes and Michelin Pilot Super Sports tyres. In addition, there is a new ‘Power Sene’ suspension unit that will mitigate torque steer similar to the Civic Type R.
The standard version of the Veloster is powered by a 2.0-litre inline four that delivers a maximum power output of 149 PS and peak torque of 178 Nm coupled to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Whereas, the Turbo version gets a 1.6-litre turbo inline four with a potential to deliver a maximum power output of 204 PS and peak torque of 264 Nm that comes mated to either a seven-speed dual clutch or a six-speed manual.
Sitting at the top of the line, the Veloster N gets a 2.0-litre turbo inline-four engine with 278 PS maximum power and 350 Nm peak torque, which will be only available with a six-speed manual transmission. The complete lineup of the updated Hyundai Veloster is expected to hit the market by the 4th quarter of this year with the local launch yet not declared.
