KEY TAKEAWAYS
When will Nissan begin using low CO2 and recycled aluminum?
According to Nissan, it will begin using low CO2 and recycled aluminum beginning in 2024 and will completely transition to using such parts by 2030.What car parts use aluminum materials?
Car parts that require the use of aluminum include wheels, chassis parts, axle parts and harness wires.According to the Japanese carmaker, aluminum accounts for approximately 10 percent of a vehicle’s weight. On that note, using low CO2 aluminum — aka green aluminum — will allow the marque to take a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality.
Nissan plans to take a step-by-step approach in reaching its goal. The company will begin by using low CO2 or recycled aluminum in new and current models starting this year. It will start with wheels, chassis parts, axle parts and harness wires made from green aluminum. In the first quarter of 2025, approximately 20 percent of the newly mined aluminum Nissan uses for car parts procured in Japan, the United States, and Europe is expected to be replaced with green or recycled aluminum.
By 2027, all new models produced by the auto firm will use low CO2 aluminum.
Then, Nissan aims to complete the full transition to low CO2 and recycled aluminum parts by 2030.
“Nissan places sustainability at the core of its business, aiming for a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world. Nissan will continue to accelerate its efforts towards realizing a sustainable society,” the company wrote in a press release.
Green aluminum is produced using non-fossil fuel-derived electricity and can reduce CO2 emissions during production by approximately 50 percent. On the other hand, recycled aluminum can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 95 percent.
