KEY TAKEAWAYS
What is the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging system?
The V2G system allows electric vehicle (EV) owners to use the stored energy in their EVs to power their homes and contribute energy back to the grid during peak usage times. When is Nissan planning to introduce the V2G system?
Nissan plans to introduce the V2G charging system on selected future models by 2026.According to the brand, the vehicle-to-grid (V2G), or bi-directional charging capabilities for electric vehicles (EV), allows users to utilize the stored energy in their EV units to power up their homes. During peak power usage times, Nissan EV owners can likewise lighten the load on the grid by contributing energy through the Nissan V2G system.
The upcoming V2G system from the Japanese car brand is likewise touted for its ability to further integrate renewable energy into a given area’s energy supply. An EV equipped with V2G, after all, can store power generated by wind or solar sources and return it to the grid as needed.
As for the reasoning behind the aforementioned initiative, Nissan says it is part of its “The Arc” business plan, which seeks to offer various innovations related to EV technologies. Doing so will open up alternative revenue streams for the car maker.
On the other hand, the technology will also contribute to the Yokohama-headquartered company’s Ambition 2030 efforts. As a reminder, the aforementioned long-term program encompasses Nissan’s goal of creating a “cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.”
“This technology we will to customers is a potential game-changer for how we think of EVs. Not just a means of getting from A to B, but as a mobile energy storage unit that can save people money and support the transition from fossil fuels, bringing us closer to a carbon-free future,” Nissan Vice President of global electrification ecosystem and EV programs Hugues Desmarchelier said.
Per Nissan, the project will see its initial rollout in the United Kingdom in 2026, followed by other markets in Europe. Additionally, the brand shared that it recently completed a year-long trial run for the V2G technology at The University of Nottingham, UK.
Currently, the company is also developing a compact, car-integrated form of the AC-bidirectional charger, which Nissan promises to be cheaper than a regular stand-alone mono-directional EV charger. For now, however, the Japanese marque has yet to indicate which future vehicle models are receiving its new V2G technologies.
Comparatively, the locally available Nissan Leaf EV is equipped with vehicle-to-load technology, which can also output energy but on a much smaller scale. Specifically, it can power up small devices such as electric fans, a coffee maker, or a camping hot plate, among others.
