Nissan to use shared, modular core components to reduce costs in EV powertrain development

MANILA: Nissan has introduced “X-in-1,” a new approach for developing electrified powertrains. The X-in-1 approach calls for the basic EV and e-Power powertrain components to be shared and modularized, which will reduce research and manufacturing costs by 30% by 2026 compared to 2019.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is Nissan's X-in-1 approach?

Nissan's X-in-1 approach calls for the basic EV and e-Power powertrain components to be shared and modularized, which will reduce research and manufacturing costs by 30% by 2026 compared to 2019.
  • How many electrified models does Nissan target to release by 2030?

Nissan aims to expand its portfolio with 27 new electrified models, including 19 EVs, by the fiscal year 2030.
  • Nissan wants to make its EV and e-Power vehicles even more competitive by using the X-in-1 approach. The motor, inverter, and reducer of Nissan's 3-in-1 powertrain prototype are all modular and designed for use in EVs. A 5-in-1 prototype that further modularizes the generator and increaser is envisioned for e-Power vehicles.

The X-in-1 approach, which includes 3-in-1, 5-in-1, and other possible versions, has been created to allow the production of EV and e-Power core components on the same line.

In 2010, Nissan became the first carmaker to mass-market an EV, the Nissan Leaf. In order to further improve its electrification innovations, Nissan has been attentively listening to its EV customers worldwide. In 2016, Nissan introduced its revolutionary e-Power electrified powertrain using its EV technology. Because it is entirely motor-driven, it offers the same driving pleasure as an EV.

Aside from sharing and modularizing core components, the X-in-1 approach to developing electrified powertrains also enables size and weight reduction of the unit which improves vehicle driving performance and minimizes noise and vibration, as well as the adoption of newly developed motors that limit the use of heavy rare earth elements to 1% or less of the magnet weight.

Nissan targets to achieve e-Power pricing parity with ICE vehicles by around 2026.

“We make the most of our expertise and know-how from our more-than-a-decade long development and production of electrified technologies. Through our innovations in electrified powertrain development, we’ll continue to create new value for customers and deliver 100% motor-driven vehicles – EVs and e-Power – as widely as possible,” Nissan Senior Vice President Toshihiro Hirai stated.

Nissan aims to expand its portfolio with 27 new electrified models, including 19 EVs, by the fiscal year 2030 as part of its long-term vision, Nissan Ambition 2030. Nissan aims to reach the widest possible audience with the distinctive value of its electrified vehicles, so it introduces the best models to each market at the right time.
