Onix sedan unveiled by Chevrolet, to be the next-gen Sail?
MANILA: Chevrolet has been quite active at Auto Shanghai 2019. Not only the American automaker introduced two new crossovers, but it has also come up with a new sedan, Onix. While the nameplate was previously given to a hatchback in the Latin American region,
this time around, a subcompact sedan has been given the title of Onix. Teased last month, i.e., March 2019, the newest sedan from the stable of Chevrolet will be locking horns with the likes of Hyundai Accent, Mazda2, Toyota Vios, and Honda City.
With all possibilities of the Onix replacing the Sail, the new sedan is nothing like the one it’s going succeed. While the Sail is a decent looking car with not a flamboyant appearance, the Onix, on the other hand, is a sedan with a muscular design language. This will help Chevrolet in alluring younger customers in particular.
The outside of the new Onix is nothing but spectacular thanks to the black elements and red accents all around the car. The likes of the front grille, rearview mirrors, 16-inch alloys, and other parts are all dipped in black and are adorned by red accents. If that was not enough, even the Chevrolet logo has been done in black with white edges.
Just like some of the luxury sedans, the Onix also features a grey and beige scheme on the inside. A total of 22 storage spaces along with the seats and the steering wheel both clothed with leather provide the Onix with a premium and practical feel.
Then there is the MyLink infotainment system that comes equipped with stuff like Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, OnStar safety link, weather updates, AM/FM radio, real-time smart navigation. Taking the tech inside of the Onix to a new level, Chevrolet has also equipped the climate control with an air purification system.
Let’s talk about what’s under the hood, shall we? Unlike the other sedans which usually feature four-pot mills, the Onix comes housing inside a 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoTec turbo motor. This engine is good enough for pumping out 125 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 180 Nm. The gearbox that sends the power to the wheels is a six-speed dynamic start/stop Shift transmission unit.
Numerous safety features have made their way to the Chevrolet Onix including anti-lock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, stability control, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring system, and a reverse camera. In China, the Chevrolet Onix has been priced at RMB 96,900 to RMB 99,900.
If we translate that amount in our currency, we Chinese sedan costs Php 752,791 to Php 776097. We hope Chevrolet brings the Onix in the Philippines sooner than later and once the sedan lands on the Filipino shores, we expect its competitors to have a tough time.
