With the theme “Mobility + Humanity: Innovating for the Common Good”, the 2022 Philippine International Motor Show is bringing together the country's biggest car manufacturers and partners in raising awareness on the future of mobility through sustainable and safer mobility solutions.

Following the PIMS’ theme, top automotive brands —  BMWChery, FotonGeelyHondaHyundaiIsuzu, KiaMazdaMitsubishiNissanSuzuki, and Toyota —  had begun showcasing their electrified vehicles, aside from transport innovations and mobility solutions.

The BMW iX, an all-electric vehicle that was introduced in the Philippines in May, is the focal point of the BMW exhibit at PIMS 2022.

Equipped with the fifth-generation BMW eDrive, the BMW iX’s electric motor generates 326 horsepower and 630Nm of torque, which is mated to a single-speed automatic transmission and the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. Fully charged, the BMW iX has a 425km maximum range.

A spaceframe made of aluminum is a feature of the BMW iX. To improve durability and reduce weight, the carbon cage, roof, and sides are covered with carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.

The iX's 12 ultrasonic sensors, five radar sensors, and five cameras all assure safety. The Anti-Lock Braking System, Dynamic Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, and Parking Assistant are also standard on the BMW iX. The iX earned a five-star safety certification from Euro NCAP, demonstrating that it is not just effective but also dependable.

The BMW iX is priced at P6.29 million. Every purchase comes with a wall box charger, five-year BMW factory warranty, eight-year high-voltage battery warranty, and six-year BMW Service Inclusive warranty.

Over at the PIMS 2022 booth of Chery Auto Philippines, the Tiggo 8 Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is displayed next to the Tiggo 8 2.0T.

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV's 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, a powerful electric motor, and cutting-edge batteries all work together with a ground-breaking hybrid transfer gearbox to produce astounding fuel economy and performance.

    Chery Tiggo 8 Pro

The Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV can go up to 90 kilometers in electric-only mode. There is only a three-hour charging period.

Among a host of gadgets, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro boasts a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) with 12 safety functions including Rear Cross-Traffic Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Door Opening Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Integrated Cruise Assist, Intelligent High-Beam Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Speed Limit Sign Recognition.

Hyundai Motor Philippines (HMPH) also unveiled the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Korean automaker's first entirely electric vehicle, at PIMS 2022. In January 2023 — the crossover utility vehicle (CUV), which was named the 2022 World Car of the Year — will make its formal debut in the Philippines.

    Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is available in two variants on the global market, both of which are based on the Electric-Global Modular Platform: one option pairs a single electric motor with a 58 kWh battery pack, while the other pairs two electric motors with a 72.6 kWh battery.

While the latter is capable of producing 305 PS and 605 Nm, the former has a maximum power output of 170 PS and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. On both variants, a single-speed transmission is in charge of shifting.

Through PIMS 2022, Kia Philippines marks the brand's entry into the electric vehicle market and represents its commitment to sustainability — the local distributor is doing this with the EV6, Kia’s first EV.

Local sales of Kia EV6 will begin in early 2023, according to Kia Philippines. The price of this EV will be below P4 million.

With its long-range, zero-emissions power, 800V ultra-fast charging, and attractive appearance, the Kia EV6 revolutionizes the crossover SUV market. The EV6 is the first Kia model created using the company's newly created battery-electric vehicle platform (BEVs).

    Kia Ev6

The Kia EV6 is propelled by a completely electric drivetrain that consists of a 168kW electric motor and a high-voltage battery pack. It can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kph in 7.3 seconds and has a torque output of 350Nm. The estimated range is greater than 500 kilometers.

Every purchase of Kia EV6 comes with the Kia In Cable Control Box (ICCB) charger. Customers may also purchase a home wall-mounted charger that will be installed by Greenstrum.

With Kia Philippines under the Ayala Corporation, the carmaker shares a vision with the company of bringing sustainability to the country. More than 20 electric vehicle charging stations will be installed throughout seven cities in Luzon in the upcoming weeks, Kia Philippines President Manny Aligada stated during PIMS 2022.

For Mazda, it is presenting electrified mobility through the 3 and CX-30 Hybrid models. Mazda M Hybrid cars use an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) that captures energy normally wasted during braking.

Instead of the power being unused, the kinetic energy is stored as electric energy in the battery. The energy is then used to start the engine from idling stop and power the car's electrical components. This stored energy eases the engine's load and then improves fuel efficiency and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

2022 Mazda3 Ignite Edition: Worth the premium?

Like the other mild hybrid vehicles, the Mazda M Hybrid cars' battery charges while the cars are driven. But when they slow down, it never takes power away from the engine.

Mitsubishi Motor Philippines Corporation (MMPC) showed how its Dendo Drive Station works with the Outlander PHEV.

The Dendo Drive Station showcases Mitsubishi’s vehicle-to-home (V2H) energy ecosystem. The V2H provides charge to the Outlander PHEV, which in turn, sends electricity back the station.

PHEVs can be driven on electric power alone for a certain distance and speed. Once the charge has run out, the regular combustion engine takes over just like in a full hybrid. In pure electric mode, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV can travel for 55 kilometers without emitting CO2 or using a drop of fuel.

To underscore its push of bringing electrified mobility in the country, Nissan Philippines brings its Leaf and Kicks e-Power models at PIMS 2022.

The Nissan Leaf is a fully-electric vehicle, with a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery providing a range of up to 311 kilometers on a full charge. This is comparable to making a one-way out-of-town journey to Baguio or commuting twice a day for five days between Quezon City and Bonifacio Global City, Nissan calculated.

Drivers of the electric hatchback have a variety of charging options, making charging simple and convenient. With the included universal charging cable and a dedicated wall socket at home, the Leaf may be fully charged in 15 to 18 hours. In several Nissan dealerships across the country, quick charging stations allow owners to fully charge their Nissan Leaf in as little as 40 to 60 minutes.

    Nissan Kicks e-Power

As for the Nissan Kicks, it boasts of the carmaker’s spin on hybrid powertrain called E-Power. Nissan Philippines promised that it combines the benefits of an internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV.

E-Power comprises a 100% electric motor-driven system whose electric motor completely drives the wheels. In the Kicks, this e-motor gets its charge from a 2.13kW lithium-ion battery pack, which in turn, sources its juice from a 1.2-liter ICE acting as a generator.

Meanwhile, Suzuki Auto Philippines revealed its first electrified model, the Ertiga Hybrid, at the 2022 Philippine International Motor Show. The hybrid, seven-seater MPV makes its local debut following its world debut last April and its Asean arrival last June.

The 2022 Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid is powered by Suzuki’s Smart Hybrid technology, which is composed of a 1.5-liter K15B engine, a 12-volt lithium-ion battery, and an integrated starter generator (ISG).

In the carmaker’s Smart Hybrid Technology, the ISG and 12V battery work together. The system charges the battery with the electricity generated by deceleration energy. It also stops unnecessary power consumption when the vehicle is running at cruising speed.

By providing power assist to the 1.5-liter gas engine, the Suzuki Smart Hybrid reduces engine load when the car is driven in traffic situations that affect fuel consumption, such as standing starts and hard acceleration.

To save even more fuel by preventing engine idling, the Ertiga Hybrid’s Smart Hybrid system also switches off the engine when the car slows down to a halt and when it is stopped. When pace is needed again, the ISG restarts the engine in a quiet manner, Suzuki said.

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) is underscoring its market lead in terms of hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). At PIMS 2022, TMP showcased its hybrid models the  CamryCorolla Altis GR-S HEV, and Corolla Cross GR-S HEV.

TMP's range of HEVs are positioned to offer affordable access to electrified technology. HEVs do not rely on charging from fossil-based power sources, but instead generate their own power through self-charging systems.

    Toyota at PIMS

According to the most recent official statistics provided by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI), as of the end of June 2022, there had already been 1,013 xEVs sold in the market — with a total of 962 of the 2022 year-to-date sales are Toyota and Lexus models.

In addition to these electrified vehicles, PIMS 2022  visitors can test drive some of the latest vehicles in the market from the participating brands in the show's outdoor event area where car club meets are also gathered.

Aftermarket retail booths — Autoline MotorSports, Centro Manufacturing Corporation, Consumer Care Products, Inc., Digicars Auto Trading, Europlates Euro Car Accessories Inc., Forceworks, Inc., Halden Galway, JNY Global Resources, Inc., Nature Joe’s, Otium Health Care Co., Philkotse.com-Maxspeed Autoportal Inc., Power Equipment & Supplies Inc., Shop4Fun, Sta.Lucia Global Marketing Inc., Swak-Dito, Thunder Automotive Parts Inc.
