After the introduction of its “The Art of Dreams” global initiative at Singapore Art Week 2022, when Porsche featured Cyril Lancelin's immersive installation “Remember your Dreams,” German sports car manufacturer highlighted Singapore as Asia's City of Dreams once again.
Porsche brought Scottish artist Chris Labrooy's installation “Dream Big.” to Singapore for the second installment of “The Art of Dreams.” The 3.5-meter-tall structure, which features an actual 911 sports car, speaks to the child in everyone and takes them back to a time when imagination had no boundaries.
“The piece asks the beholder: Where did we hope our journey would take us? Are we following our dreams? And as if rising up from another dimension, the larger-than-life figure inspires us to ask: Where will our dreams take us next?” Porsche said in a statement.
Visitors could very well recognize the large figure rising up from the same rubber flooring used in playgrounds traditionally seen around local housing estates as a nod to the Singaporean context for this edition of “The Art of Dreams.” This gave the artwork a genuinely Singaporean flavor while representing a kid playing with a toy car.
Art connoisseurs were also able to immerse themselves in a curated collection of Chris Labrooy's artworks at Porsche's new temporary experiential brand space at Mandala Club.
Adjacent to Labrooy's artworks, Porsche and Mandala Club have converted the ground floor of the private members club into a minimalist gallery space. The “Crystal Eroded Porsche 992,” another peculiarly carved Porsche 911 sports car made by renowned American artist Daniel Arsham, was displayed in the center of the gallery.
The Porsche 911 is the subject of both shows, which is timely given that Porsche will commemorate the 60th anniversary of its icon this year. Only a few can make the claim to be as supreme as the Porsche 911. Over the course of decades, the Porsche 911 evolved into more than just a legendary sports car and racer. Through its several starring roles in films, art, and pop culture, it also came to symbolize a larger zeitgeist.
The exterior of Arsham's “Crystal Eroded Porsche 992” exhibits an unique off-white tone that is accentuated by eroded sections that contain quartz and pyrite crystals. A bespoke earth-tone stone-washed canvas has also been added to the interior of the vehicle to complete the aesthetic, and signed drawings are spread throughout the upholstery. A rear “ARSHAM 3019” license plate completes the vehicle.
Porsche Singapore and Mandala Club also released an exclusive line of artist merchandise by Labrooy and Arsham. Proceeds made from the sale of will go to *SCAPE which supports local youth programs in the fields of entrepreneurship, media and entertainment, and creative arts.
