Porsche Taycan wins 2020 World Luxury Car and World Performance Car awards

Porsche Taycan wins 2020 World Luxury Car and World Performance Car awards

MANILA: The Porsche Taycan picked up the World Performance Car and World Luxury Car titles as the pure-electric four-door sports car acquired the votes of 86 known automotive journalists from 24 countries worldwide. The judges evaluated over 50 new models in play for the 2020 World Car of the Year (WCOTY) Awards.

For its capability to smoothly combine exclusive features, the Taycan upstaged two other contenders in the World Luxury Car category, namely the Mercedes-Benz EQC and the Porsche 911. It also won over two other Porsche candidates, the 911 and the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and Porsche 718 Spyder (which were considered as one entry), as it obtained the World Performance Car title. The Porsche Taycan was also one of the three finalists that competed for the 2020 World Car Design category.

Based on the 2019 media report of Prime Research (an international communications research company), the 2020 WCOTY Awards is regarded the best automobile recognition program globally for seven consecutive years. Officially premiering in January 2004, the awards aimed at reflecting the realities of the world market and acknowledging, rewarding, and inspiring competence, leadership and creativity in a fast-changing automobile sector.

According to Oliver Blume, chairman of the executive board at Porsche AG, the Porsche Tayan was designed and manufactured with a vivid objective: To demonstrate that an electric car can deliver daily usability, comfort, performance, and driving pleasure that is attributed to every Porsche vehicle.

Blume also added that the awards the Porsche Taycan has received are a reflection of the positive feedback from the customers, and it served as a motivation for future ventures concerning the brand. The company perceives itself as a leading provider of sustainable mobility and has delivered a highly advanced sports car on the market through the Taycan.

Although it was the first time for Porsche to acquire the World Luxury Car title, the World Performance Car award is the sixth win for the iconic sports car brand. It previously bested other brands in 2006, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017.

Finalists who are qualified for the World Performance Car title must be manufactured in large volumes of about 2,000 units yearly. The models must feature high efficiency and must be commercially available on at least two continents from January 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020.

According to one of the members of the executive board of research and development at Porsche AG, Michael Steiner, the two categories that the Porsche Taycan has won emphasized what the company was trying to attain when the Taycan was manufactured. Porsche wanted to build an all-electric driver-focused sports car that can take on the performance of any vehicle. Simultaneously, they concentrated on uncompromised modern, digital convenience, and comfort for its passengers as well as daily functionality.

The 2020 WCOTY awards continue the undefeated streak for both the current Porsche 911 and the Porsche Tycan, which have already won about 40 international awards in the past, most of which came from China, UK, USA, and Germany.

The Porsche 911 has reaped various readers’ choice awards in top automotive publications such as the Auto Trophy award (from the Auto Zeuitung magazine of Germany), Best Driver’s Cars award (from the Motor Trend magazine of USA), China Performance Car of the Year award (from the Chinese Car of the Year jury), and the Best Performance Car of the Year award (from the Auto Express magazine of UK).

Blume stated that the Porsche 911 has kept the company on the pathway towards success for over 60 years because of its unique design. Porsche has consistently enhanced the distinct technical concept of the 911 for several years.

As for the Porsche Taycan, it also bagged numerous awards in the past such as the Car of the Year: Top Gear UK, German Car of the Year, and the China Green Car of the Year awards. The Taycan also reaped the innovation prize from the Connect magazine of Germany.
