Shell PH launches carbon offset program, EV charging service

MANILA: Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation has launched the country's first Nature-based Solutions (NBS) Carbon Offset Service for motorists, and Shell Recharge, the company's first high-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging service in the country and the first of its kind on Philippine expressways.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Where is the first Shell Recharge station located?

Shell Recharge is now available at Shell Mamplasan.
  • What is the NBS Carbon Offset Service?

The NBS Carbon Offset Service invites both B2B Fleet customers and regular motorists to become carbon neutral. Customers have the option to compensate for the equivalent carbon emissions from their fuel purchase for an additional service fee per liter. The total number of liters that customers purchased using carbon offsets are then assigned the equivalent carbon credits from Shell's independently verified global portfolio of Shell NBS afforestation, reforestation, and conservation projects. Shell then retires these carbon credits on the customer's behalf.
  • Both projects highlight Pilipinas Shell's efforts to decarbonize mobility by helping customers in minimizing and offsetting carbon emissions. They also highlight the company's transformation into the preferred mobility destination of motorists.

“Shell is rapidly becoming the Philippines’ leading mobility company and this launch is a testament to the range of its offer to motorists. The NBS Carbon Offset Service and Shell’s first EV charger in the country are among the initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and to cater to a growing number of customers whose needs are changing fast,” Shell Mobility Global Executive Vice President Istvan Kapitany stated. “We are making sure that Shell sites will become the go-to place for all customers, whether they drive traditional or EV, thanks to an integrated offer of fuel, EV, and convenience retail. They will be mobility destinations for everyone.”

Shell will now serve EV owners and customers who are engaged in carbon offsetting through these new offers. Beginning this month, Shell Recharge will be available at Shell Mamplasan and it will continue expanding to more Shell Mobility stations within the next 12 months. Fifteen sites, including Shell Mamplasan, will offer the Shell NBS Carbon Offset Service by July, with a target of 100 sites by the end of the year.

With the opening of the first Shell Recharge site in Shell Mamplasan, Pilipinas Shell and its retailers are leading the energy shift in response to the rising demand for EVs. As the first charger under the Shell brand and the most powerful DC high-performance fast charger along Philippine expressways, it will make EV charging more convenient and accessible to users. It has two EV charging points with CCS2 connectors so that two EVs can charge at once. With a 180kwH charger, a n average EV can recharge to the optimum battery charge levels in just 30 minutes. This varies depending on the type of vehicle and its battery management system.

In 2020, Pilipinas Shell became the first energy company in the country to provide its B2B fleet customers with the NBS Carbon Offset Service. With the help of its retailers, Pilipinas Shell will now make carbon emission offsets accessible to regular consumers.

“By being the first Shell market in Asia to offer this particular service to everyday customers, Pilipinas Shell underscores its commitment to continue powering progress to achieve a more sustainable future. These two new low-emission energy solutions encapsulate what Pilipinas Shell means when we say sustainability. It’s about providing energy in a responsible manner to our consumers so that we can minimize the impact we make on the environment while achieving a lower-carbon future,” Pilipinas Shell Country Head Lorelie Quiambao-Osial said.
